RNY on a Severe, O2 dependent asthmatic?

Recommended Posts

Hi, I'm a five year Bander seriously thinking about RNY. I've had four doctor's asking and suggesting I have WLS. I see a Pulmonologist once a month since I developed Severe Asthma back in winter 2013. I am not getting enough oxygen to my heart so I am on supplemental O2 24/7/365.

I had both knees replaced a few years ago, and did not follow up with the exercising very well, soon after, not at all. My Pulmonologist does NOT want me to do any exercising till we get a better understanding of my illness. However, they have a Doc supervised physical therapy unit in the same building for people like me and when I can come up with the cash, I'm on it!

My question...Will a surgeon do an RNY on a patient with this kind of health issue? Oh, I'm 47, 5'5" weighing my highest ever, 365.

Polly, I too am o2 dependent except when sleeping. My surgeon just talked to my pulmo by phone last week and called me to say he wouldn't do my surgery!! My pulmo had already sent clearance letter in!! So, I'm starting over at a hospital rather than the Barix Clinic. Good luck to both of us!!!

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
