Question about pre-op diet

Recommended Posts

I am doing a pre-op diet and my doc seemed more relaxed than many. I see many of you doing liquid diets. What is involved with the liquid diet? I want to make sure my liver is nice and skinny for my surgery on April 16!

My doctor had me do 10 days liquid diet, day before clear liquid only day of - nothing. I used a Protein Shake called Bariatric Advantage (as per his request). He said that my liver was great, nice and skinny day of surgery. Not going to lie to you, it was SO HARD! I was hungry the ENTIRE time. But, I lost 10bs during the pre-op diet and the hunger was gone after surgery, so it was all worth it.

Don't do it if you don't have to. It's hell. By far it was the hardest part about this process for me. If your doc doesn't want you to do it, trust him. And trust me, you're not missing anything!!!! I did it for 3 weeks and many people nearly lost their lives, a lot of people got yelled at, and I punched a lot of pillows. HANGRY! So if you have dodged this bullet, dodge it happily!

I am on day 8 of my pre op diet. It's hard. I am limited to the number of Protein Shakes, sugar free Jello and pudding. Raw vegetables. No Condiments. No salt. Popsicles and sf fudgecicles.

If you decide to use a different Protein than the one recommended by your doctor, just be sure to check the carbs and sugar and Protein grams. They can vary greatly. you can take your current powder to Vitamin shoppe and they can help find one that is comparable. I had great luck with one made by OH YEAH. I loved it pre op, and after surgery I couldnt stand it anymore.

Follow what ur surgeon set fourth for u. Pre-op diets vary surgeon to surgeon but ur surgeon has devised a plan that's best for u and ur unique situation. I am on day 8 of my liquid diet but just know some surgeons do 2 weeks some 2days and some none at all just depends on the practice of the surgeon and ur needs.

My surgery is set for May 28th and I will be starting my liquid diet with something called Optifast 2 weeks prior, the reason for it is to shrink the liver and the fat around the liver and that makes it easier for the surgeon to get to where he needs to during surgery without the liver getting in the way, hope that was helpful to anyone :)

started my preop diet today- and was so sick =[. what does everyone think about freezing the shakes into popsicles to make them more enjoyable. same thing with Isopure after surgery. i know for me right now its a struggle to even get 30 oz of Water and 1 shake down. i also feel insanely on edge.. like cranky or snappy as well as very out of it and spacey =[. what is everyone going through and feeling during preop?? all my diet consists on is Bariatric Advantage Protein powder yogurt - fatfree broth and Clear liquids.

any recommendations on how to consume this powder??

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Your so close now! It's gonna be great :) Wishing you a speedy recovery and looking forward to seeing how it goes!

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

Am feeling this right now. My surgery date is 4/1. Sign the consent tomorrow. I feel like I overloaded myself with too much info, too many opinions. Got to the point where I was wondering if I should do this. Then I thought of my reasons for taking this step and that settled my nerves. Still get moments of doubt but am striving forward. Am just going to follow my book from the surgeon. Joined this because I was told by my dietician that I should do this for support
