When were you able to sleep confortably in your bed?

Recommended Posts

I'm 5 days post op and finally slept in my bed last night for the first time since before surgery, but I had to sleep propped up and on my back. I long to be able to cuddle up and be comfortable in my bed and to be able to comfortably sleep on my side or stomach. How long until you were able to sleep comfortably on your side or stomach?

I slept the first two nights I was home, in my bed, on my back. Then the third night I started sleeping on my side with a pillow against my tummy for a little support and I was fine. I slept much better that way because I hate sleeping on my back.

I wasn't able to sleep in my bed for 4 weeks. And even then, it was hit or miss if it was comfortable. I'm almost 7 weeks out now, and I have to wear lidocaine Patches at night to be able to sleep fairly comfortably. I can only sleep on my right side and some nights are better than others. The bigger incision is still really painful, so I had to beg my doc for something to give me some relief at night at least.

I can't wait for this pain to stop.

Surgery was 3/19 and about a week and a half later I could sleep on my back in bed. I slept in my recliner until then. I still can not sleep on my sides without pain. I hate it, because I am a side sleeper. sleeping on my back is killing me! :(

This is why I slept on my couch for 4 weeks. I absolutely can not sleep on my back. And if I do fall asleep like that, it's only for an hour or so. I still struggle, but like I said above, I finally begged begged my doc for something and it's helped a bit.

So sorry to hear about everyone's discomfort and pain issues with sleeping. Rest is so important for healing so it especially sucks when you can't get comfortable. I could sleep flat on my back and both sides from the first night after surgery. Never had any incision or abdominal pain. I was even getting in and out of my low waterbed which was co-occupied by 2 dogs and 2 cats. It was about two weeks before I felt good about sleeping on my stomach just because I was so gassy and bloated.

Thanks for the replies everyone! I hate sleeping on my back as well, but I feel a painful pulling feeling when I attempt to lay on my side so I end up just turning back to my back. I can't wait to be able to hop in my bed and sleep however I want!

Try sleeping on your side with a plump pillow pressed against and slightly under your belly so it supports it. I went home from the hospital to sleeping on both sides. I'm a week post op.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
