Post op medications (crushed meds)

Recommended Posts

Hi all, I has my wls last Tuesday and am really struggling taking my medication as I've got to crush them all. I can't sip sip sip it as it's making me feel very sick but so does drinking it quickly. Anyone struggling as well? Any tips?

I have switched to liquid acetaminophen for my arthritis. I order it from my pharmacist. I was getting tired of crushing my blood pressure pill and cholesterol pill, and opening my Prevacid capsule. This week it dawned on me that I don't need the Prevacid any more, so I stopped taking it. I then attempted to chew the other two. They taste yucky, but if I chew them along with my Flintstones chewable vitamins, it masks the taste. I was banded March 13. Hope this helps.

Yes I am struggling with my meds big time so all I have are my Vitamins that are chewable and I have stopped my bp and anxiety meds. I can't be bothered to chopped them and mix it with applesauce. How are your hunger levels? All I have been dreaming about is food. But I just tell my head and pouch to shut up. Best I can do until I am cleared for my puréed foods. I can't wait to have eggs and yogurt.

I too have to take my meds crushed and it's awful. I take them all at once a day so I don't have to do it repeatedly throughout the day. When I take them I make sure I have a flavored beverage to drink to wash them down. It helps to get the nasty flavor out. Either that or I take them and eat a spoonful or two of Jello. You can also try hot tea. I still can't do really cold Water it has to be room temp Water. It's nasty no matter what you do, but I need my meds so......

I was never told to crush them up. I did have liquid lortab for post op, but the rest is just swallowed. I even checked and was told that if I could tolerate them whole. It was ok.

Not suggesting anyone do that without first asking your medical professionals...

My Dr said if its smaller than a dime you can take it whole. I cut most of mine though because I feel like they'll just slide through me.

I crush my bp pill and drink in about a half oz Water. I take Pepcid like someone said chewing it with my Flintstone Vitamins. I have Calcium chews and every other day a B Vitamin under my tongue. I was off my BP just after the hospital, but my BP went up, so I've gone back on it.... For now.

I have liquid Lori-tab, but found that I didn't have enough pain to make the nasty taste worth it. chewable or liquid children's Tylenol has done the trick for any pains.

One morning I swallowed my Pepcid out of habit with no trouble, but scared myself.

Now here is the good stuff, before surgery I was taking fish oil, flax oil, glucosamine/chondroitin as well as some other OTC pills. Those are gone at this point.

What are you taking, and how big are they? Dr said after a few weeks I'd be able to swallow pills as big as an aspirin.

Good luck with your process!!!!

I've been swallowing pills since the day I got home, per surgeon direction. I elected to do chewable vitamins, Calcium and Fiber, as I wasn't comfortable swallowing those big caplets. No issues at all.

I crush mine and I throw it in my mouth and start gulping orange juice. The orange juice helps take the taste away.

@DirtyHarriett Ugh.... liquid Lortab..... that's disgusting too..... I gag when i try to take that..... You could maybe crush the meds and mix with applesauce if you are allowed...... I always pop a sugar free mint in my mouth after i take my crushed meds....... I can't do the Jello either. It is a problem.... I don't know how long we have to wait to be able to swallow whole pills again...... ugh...... :o

The best thing I did was buy Source of Life Gold Liquid multi Vitamin. The bottle was about $50 but lasted about 4 months, 2 T. per day. Three months post op and my bloodwork was excellent. I could not bear to take the big chalky Bariatric Advantage multi Vitamins so my husband got them. Good luck!

Hi everyone, thankyou for all your messages, advice and support. I spoke with the hospital and I'm just taking the medication when I can for nerve damage and diabetes and taking some tablets which are small whole, which they said should be ok. I was surprised but very happy and have now started taking Vitamins and minerals in liquid form as changed the brand which tastes ok. :))

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
