revision in TX 38 Posted April 7, 2014 You will be just fine!!! The "hoopla" is the most frustrating part, because you'll be like "come on, let's get to it"!! When you wake up, they will have pain meds pumped into the site AND IV, so you really won't hurt much...just will be super sleepy for the rest of the day!! My only post-op suggestion is....don't "cut calories" too much at first...just eat - the weight WILL come off, but your body will NEED you to eat fairly well so that it can heal properly. My surgeon didn't even weigh me on my post-op visits until he 4 month mark, and even then didn't want me to really lose much until at least 6 months. Follow their guidelines, but don't try to lose too much too fast (over-achiever) because that can actually set you back health-wise. You'll mostly be having broth, popsicles, Jello and coffee in the hospital, then almost ALL Protein shakes when you go home. Progress to soft food and "regular" food as they suggest and you'll be so excited when you consistently see a pound or two coming off the scales...then clothes getting looser and looser...and before long, you'll be putting on clothes that used to be skin tight that are now falling off, they are so big. It WILL happen...it has for me, even though I've really continued to eat a little "sweet treat" every day for almost 2 years now....it's so awesome to feel "normal-sized" again!!!! It is SOOOOOO worth it...and the surgery/post-op is not bad at all. Best of wishes in your "new" life after RNY!!! 1 pquinn181 reacted to this
Kimteehee 21 Posted June 16, 2014 Did any of you guys try chewable gas x after surgery? I heard gas pain is the worst thing we will have. I'm having my bypass on the 26th of June. Really scared about the pain. If I can handle a bunch of a tattoos, can I handle the after surgery pain??
revision in TX 38 Posted June 16, 2014 You shouldn't need Gas-X, although I think I have taken it before with no problems. The "gas" pain that you are hearing about is probably not heartburn-type gas, but the gas they use to navigate with the laparoscope. You may have a little discomfort from that for a few days, but it's really not that bad (or it wasn't for me) and your pain is similar to any type of surgery. They sent me home with an anti-nausea prescription and I never took a single on of them...the full Rx is still in my medicine drawer. If they give you RXs, I'd not get them filled until (or IF) you need them. They had me up walking in the hallway around the nurses station the evening of surgery...catheter, IV and all. The next morning, they removed the catheter, let me pee and shower and then go home. The first few steps were tentative, but then it wasn't bad at all....more just sore than anything else...from them poking around in your insides!!!! LOL!!! I could just be "lucky" but I really felt well really quickly. The only thing that happened to me was that I did not eat Breakfast on the morning of my first post-op visit and I think I had a blood sugar drop...faint, sweaty, etc. But, I ate after the appt and was fine from then on. Don't work yourself INTO pain either...if you accept there will be some minor discomfort and that it will only last a day or two, your mindset will be better and the pain will be even less. You are going to be so glad you got this done and on your way to a better life!!! Keep us posted! 2 rhfactor272 and Kimteehee reacted to this
