I'm 8 months out of surgery and down about 135 lbs. I've had 2 fainting spells in the past 2 days. Yesterday was smaller, today's was worse. Yesterday I just got really dizzy as I was walking and had to sit. I think I was just out for a second. Today, I was standing, got really dizzy and slumped over against a wall. I was able to tell my bf I need to sit and then I completely blacked out. He said I went completely white, lips and all. I was out for like a min and my arm was twitching. After coming to, I was pale, sweaty, and disoriented. Now I have a Migraine.

I've never had issues with my blood pressure, actually had lower bp even at my highest weight. I always shocked the nurses... I had the stomach flu on Friday and still feel blah, so I haven't been eating or drinking enough. I have been drinking Powerade to keep my electrolytes up.

Has anyone had fainting spells, not related to bp meds?

I searched the site, but every thing about fainting spells seems to be related to bp meds... I have my annual physical next week, so I'll bring it up to my PCP then. I know this might have nothing to do with my sleeve, but I figured I'd ask since there are so many knowledgable people out there :-)

Thanks!!

I would reach out to your Dr first thing tomorrow. While it's more than likely because you're not eating or drinking enough, you want to be safe & not sorry.

I used to have issues, and periodically still due, with feeling dizzy & light-headed. Only passed out once, and it was a few days post-surgery. I've confirmed with my Dr's office that it was probably because I wasn't getting enough fluids. So, if you don't want to eat much as a result of your stomach flu, please do your best to get those liquids in. Very important that we drink over 50 oz a day., minimally. I was only drinking an average of 35 oz per day. It's still a struggle but I'm doing better AND when I get those fluids in, I don't get as light-headed. Go figure :)

Take care of yourself!!

I haven't actually fainted but the dizzy and blacking out of my vision. I found it is directly related to hydration and Protein intake. If I'm low on one or the other I'm ok, but low on both and it really messes with me.

I had a stomach bug last Thursday with a lot of diarrhea. It took me a while to re-hydrate. The next day I went back to work, but a couple of times I got really dizzy. I'm totally convinced that it is because my Fluid intake was low and I had lost a lot of fluids the prior day. Made me realize how important it was to stay hydrated!

Sometimes I have issues with blacking out after standing up. For me it is because of low blood pressure. It seems to get worse when I am not hydrating enough.

Powerade and Gatorade only have sodium and potassium in them. If you just had the stomach flu, you are probably low in all your electrolytes. There is a proper electrolyte drink you can get at your pharmacy that will replace everything and is meant for situations like post-flu.

Electrolyte deficiency can be extremely serious - definitely discuss with your doctor and in the meantime get that drink :) !

Thank you for a all of your input! I have not had any other fainting spells. A few dizzy spells, but I'm really working on hydrating and eating well. I will check the pharmacy for that electrolyte drink :-)

Having had many fainting spells my life and even being hospitalized a week for tests, with no diagnosis, I know sometimes there are no medical reasons you can find for fainting. I always felt it coming on and got to a seat or the floor except once, that put me in the hospital. My husband felt dizzy after the sleeve and got in the shower anyway and blacked out (low blood pressure). He nearly killed himself, somehow cracked in six tiles, blackened his cheek, and hurt his arm. Advice, if you feel dizzy or weak, stay in a chair or bed and don't keep moving! Buy a BP cuff, relatively cheap these days, and keep your BP monitored, drink those fluids, but most of all, be aware weight changes will affect our bodies in a lot of ways.

I have had them all my life. All of my fainting spells have had different reasons, so mine have never been able to narrowed down to just one real reason.

Now that ive lost 95 pounds, I'm back to being light headed a lot.

But my dr also just told me at my 6 month check up to eat more food, less of the Protein powders. As a general rule, I carry nuts on me at all times, their a quick pick me up.

I should also say that I try to add in more sodium into my diet, that helps me out because my sodium levels have typically been low at the weight i'm at. Looking at my labs from last week, my sodium is at the lowest acceptable level. The sodium helps so my bp doesn't plummet quite so dramatically.

I fainted once about two months post-op, and then was close again five months out. I went to the ER, but they couldn't give me a definite answer as to why. I think it was from low Iron, and not enough liquids/protein. I also have had times when I've felt light-headed while in the shower.

I was told that it was my Iron and to increase my Fluid intake

I'm having dizzy spells several times a day. It happens EVERY time I stand up. I'm 3 1/2 years out. But the fainting spells started after I lost 100 pounds. They are starting to scare me.

I should say my bp was 100/78 last wee .

I get dizzy when I haven't had much sodium. When that happens (daily) I go eat a few olives or drink some Powerade zero.

This definitely sounds like something you need to address with your PCP.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
