getting back to gym

Recommended Posts

Believe me -- I'm not into that screaming, yelling, no pain no gain type of trainer either. My trainer is a young, sweet girl -- my daughter's age. We talked about what I want to accomplish. Right now, I'm pre-op and can't lose weight or I won't qualify for surgery. So, we're just working on flexibility and strength training -- no cardio. She chit-chats with me the entire time, counts for me and always varies up my routine, so I get a really good, 1-hour workout. And if she sees I'm really struggling with some exercise, she'll replace it with another one that works the same muscles.

I'm having one appointment with her a week and then 3 exercise sessions on my own in between. She's never said "come on, work harder" or anything like that. She usually asks "how did that feel" and reads my face for clues. :)

I wouldn't put up with the other kind of trainer. I've never been one to respond well to angry, yellers and I don't intend on letting someone I'm paying for a service to intimidate me. See if you can get a consult with one at your gym and it might be right for you, too.

OK, I started my pre-op diet today and guess what, I started the gym today too!!!! I am glad I went today. I was able to complete 20 minutes on the elliptic, walking/jogging 15 min. and back on the elliptic for another 15 or 20. I am glad I was able to get back. My next challenge is getting in there in the AM and seeing all of the faces of the faithful goers who will be asking where I have been. I usually only do 30 minutes a day so I was glad I was able to go a little extra.

I'm with you. Mt husband work pays for our membership to the beautiful YMCA. I went everyday for a month then can't get into it. Surgery date May 19th.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
