Protein Requirements for the Long Haul

Recommended Posts

My doctor's expectation is that I have a Protein supplement (drink) every day for the rest of my life -- which I have no problem---found some very yummie Protein Drink ideas.....plus I'm not a picky eater LOL.........but was wondering if others' doctors have the same requirements......

I've been going to a support group that's closer to my home than my surgeon's support group. This practice is just starting to do VSG (I'm like the resident sleever in the group LOL).......this particular practice/doctor wants their patients to get Protein strictly from real food sources (as opposed to a protein drink). So it can be an odd situation during our support group since our surgeons have different expectations.

When I tell people I have a Protein Drink every day, they are a little surprised because I'm 8 months out.

So, I'm wondering, fellow sleevers, what is your doctor's point of view about protein sources for the long haul once you are on full foods. Thanks!

While I'm only a week out, I have been having extreme difficulty getting any shakes down. So today, my nutritionist said to not worry about it. She also said she would rather me get my Protein from real food (starting next week I get to have pureed food - yay!!)

So far, I've learned that each and every surgeon is different - but I don't see a problem with you getting your Protein from a shake or real food - as long as you get it. It may be a personal preference thing.

Congrats on the great progress!!

My surgeon told me that he sees the best long term results in patients that continue to have a Protein supplement daily, especially through the first year.

Mine says that realistically I probably won't get enough from food at least for the first 6 months, so to use shakes to make sure I'm getting enough. At that point I can take a look at my food and if I'm getting enough, just use the shakes to fill in if needed.

My doctor and nutritionist say the best Protein is from real food. I'm one week out from surgery and should be moving toward real food in a month. They say that even with eating real food, I'll need to eat one Protein Shake a day. I don't really mind Protein Drinks. I seem to do better with less food choices.

I am expecting to have at least one Protein Shake meal per day from here on out..I don't cook much...I don't eat breakfast...it's guaranteed protein...and I don't hate them.

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

The 14th was my day. I am home and recovery is going pretty smooth. They even let me walk out of the hospital. Picture of me in recovery curtesy of my boyfriend lol.

Neat you have a pic of this day! I was sooo happy to get my surgery. It was well worth it! And I'm not even near my goal. I had surgery Dec. 2!
