Can someone tell me if this is normal?

Recommended Posts

I had my surgery on Wednesday April 2nd, so I'm 2 days post op. I had a hiatal hernia that had to be repaired also. The first day I had acid sitting in my throat that wouldn't go down bc of swelling, now I'm battling the pain and soreness.

I didn't have very much trouble making my laps walking around the hospital. Everyone kept saying walking is so important and it will make me feel so much better. I had to stay an extra night in the Hospital BC of swelling, when I did the leak test it moved extremely slow so that's how they could tell it was swollen.

I got to come home today and I never thought I'd say this but I miss the shit out of those IV meds they were pumping in me.

I'm having so much trouble walking today, with EVERY step I take it feels like my stomach muscles and incisions are ripping open. Is it normal to have a hard time walking 2/3 days post op? Did anyone else experience the ripping pain every time they moved or walked? Everyone told me walking would make me feel so much better and that couldn't be more untrue today. How long did it take for the pain to go away? I know I will be sore and in pain for several weeks but I mean the pain where you can barely move or walk..

I wasn't able to stomach the liquid meds they sent home with me, so I was in a lot of pain those 1st 5 to 7 days post-op, but all I remember was the hurt, not if it was a ripping sensation or what. I was just strong enough to make it from my chair to the bed or bathroom, so you're not alone in this.

By day 8, the pain was pretty much gone and all I felt was the weakness. By day 10, I was back at work and the pain was a memory - I never hurt after that. But it did take a few weeks before I felt comfortable laying on either side in bed. I kept feeling a pulling sensation - especially when laying on the right side.

I was hoping to have one of those easy recoveries I'd read so much about, but it wasn't in the cards for me. At least there weren't any complications.

I was sleeved Monday the 31st and had the hiatal hernia repair also. I felt like that was giving me more trouble than the sleeve! I was having trouble taking a deep breath and was super sore. I had that nasty yuck in the back of my throat but that has gone away now. I still feel like I have a brick in my chest - especially when drinking. I do better with warm or room temp drinks. I cannot drink cold water! Keep in touch! I hope you feel better!!

I was sleeved on the 31st and had a hiatal hernia. As long as I could stay awake walking was good. The first few days if I had beer laying down for awhile and then tried to walk I could feel it. Not really painful but annoying. Hope you feel better soon.

I felt horrible walking too, I think it was the weight of my stomach pulling down and then it bouncing as I walked. The tighter clothing helped it not jiggle so much and stopped a lot of the pain, and those meds in the hospital were GREAT. Good Luck!

I had my surgery on 3/31 and also had an unknown hiatal hernia repair and as soon as they took the pain med button away and tried to replace it with weak pain meds, I was miserable. I couldn't move. I couldn't take deep breaths..i felt like I got punched in the sternum. I could walk but I paid for it. I cried. Thank goodness the surgeon came in to see me right away. She said the hernia makes for a couple extra, deeper stitches and can cause more pain and she put me back on the pill form of the original pain med and I'm 5 days post op and much, much better. Hang in there!

I also had my surgery on Monday, March 31st and I was discharged Friday evening. I stopped all the pain meds on Wednesday. I had so much nausea that I could not move a muscle without heaving. I was certain it was the pain medication and I was right. By Thursday night the nausea was better and by Friday evening I felt almost human. I have pain but I'm not taking any of the prescribed pain meds. I'd rather hurt that feel like I'm going to puke all day long.

My stomach does spasm with every swallow. My doctor says this could last a few weeks. I see how this surgery causes you to lose weight - it's impossible to eat!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
