Terribj 208 Posted April 4, 2014 My doc said no - if we swallow it it may end up blocking the stomach passage ways and doc told me he'd have to do surgery to repair. 1 ProudGrammy reacted to this
ProudGrammy 8,322 Posted April 4, 2014 (edited) Are we sleevers allowed to chew gum? If so, what if a we swallowed a piece of gum? @@Terribj said exactly what my NUT told me about about gum - possibly you could swallow, then might/would need surgery i never was much of a gum chewer so this rule doesn't bother me @@Kittenheart I see you are around 10 days PO!!!! since you didn't say otherwise, hopefully things are going well please remember to drink as much Water as you can small sips at first - but eventually, carefully you'll be drinking well continued good recovery kathy Edited April 4, 2014 by proudgrammy 1 LilMissDiva Irene reacted to this
JeanZ_RN 378 Posted April 4, 2014 I was never told not to chew gum, and the statements about possibly needing surgery to remove gum don't make sense to me (RN since 1973). My impression is that our remaining stomach is about the size of a banana, and if that is true one chewed piece of gum should not obstruct it. Besides, ANYthing that lands in the stomach is immediately attacked by gastric acid, which is VERY potent. 1 LilMissDiva Irene reacted to this
Reviewer 20 Posted April 4, 2014 My surgeon said to chew away. So I do. He said that my gi tract was unchanged as far as rerouting goes so not to worry. Seems to me that some food items would get stuck as well if gum would.
LilMissDiva Irene 3,282 Posted April 4, 2014 @@Kittenheart I'm 3.5 years out and I have chewed gum since about a month out of surgery and never once experienced any problems. I love it, it's great for head hunger and helps keep your breath fresh. Especially when you're going through ketosis.
