Most insurances require either BMI of 35 with 2 co-morbidities like hypertension, diabetes, sleep apnea, etc. Or a BMI of 40 with no co-morbidities. Given that your BMI is 34.5, you're not in the range, but you'd be pretty close as long as you have a second health problem. I'm not sure about the age requirements, hopefully someone else can shed some light on that. Good luck.

I think the age issue is dependent on your health condition and should be left up to your doctors. This is major surgery and they will want to make sure you are a good candidate. As with any surgery you will need medical clearance from the different medical specialties. Cardiac, endocrine, pulmonary, etc. I wouldn't let my age keep me from seeking out this life saving surgery. It's very possible that a healthier 73 year old would be a much better candidate than a 53 year old who is not.

I have seen docs that will operate up to age 75.

As far as your BMI, are you in a position to self-pay? If so then your BMI is close enough I would imagine.

A third (possible) option is clinical trials -- I know there is some research going on regarding WLS and diabetes at the Cleveland Clinic.

Agree that if it was me I would definitely not let age hold me back :)

It won't cost anything to see a surgeon and talk about surgery and your options. Good luck to you.
