final preop appt and hospital interview

Recommended Posts

I have had a cesarean, gall bladder surgery and broken leg surgery. They are nothing in comparison to all my surgeon and the hospital coordinator just discussed. Have to use a microbial wash 3 days prior, 4 prescriptions to fill and blood thinner injections I have to give myself by needle. Have to use a spirometer in the hospital to avoid pneumonia, cough a lot, walk every 2 hrs to avoid clots. There just seems to be so much involved with this surgery than I suspected. I'm freaking out. My surgery is Tuesday and all I can think about is the huge list of complications they made me sign off on. Just so much more involved in this than other surgeries. I feel like I'm having open heart surgery. very overwhelmed!

. I understand this is surgery and I understand the procedure, complications and lifetime commitment. I'm just shocked by all the preop info and all they cover. My other surgeries I just showed up and there wasn't any of this. They have me so freaked out about blood clots, pneumonia getting up after surgery. Etc.

Yes this is major surgery with some pretty serious possible complications. It's a lot to absorb and not easy to digest at first. U picked ur surgeon for a reason which more than likely mean ur confident in his or her ability or u wouldn't have selected him or her. Know ur in good hands with a surgeon that's done a ton of these. More than anything send up a prayer for urself while the rest of us will do the same. Ur going to be ok! We r all cheering for u and be sure to keep us posted when u can.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
