I haven't pooped since surgery (two weeks)! - is this normal?

Recommended Posts

Sorry to be blunt but I just realized I haven't pooped since March 20! I don't really feel like I need to but keep imagining my innards just rotting away...

Is this normal after surgery? It doesn't feel healthy not to go every day.

Thanks-

I've gone everyday since surgery, but that maybe right for me.

I've managed everyday to have fruit juice 150mls (apple juice) but it has been recommended to me that if I had problems to try Prune juice, but warmed Prune juice.

I also bought some mini enemas just in case but haven't had to use them.

Did you used to go everyday before the op?

Maybe speak to your doctor.

IMO (disclaimer: not a health care professional) two weeks is too long, even for post surgery. I would call your surgeon's office and see what they recommend or permit to get things moving again. My surgeon says Senokot and Milk of Magnesia -- but yours may be different! I know Dr. Aceves has excellent follow up and I am sure that he or someone on his team can help you out.

Thank you both for your replies. I used to go everyday and it feels wrong to not have to go! I emailed Dr A's team to ask what they recommend.

Sheesh.

Try Miralax or milk of magnesia

I would go long periods after surgery aswell. My doctor listen to my stomach (primary doc not VGS doc), she said it sounded great.I used to go once or twice a day like clock work before the surgery but my doc said what really important is how you feel. I never had the feeling that i was being backed up or anything. I am 4.5 months out and now go once a week, but I feel just fine.

I almost have to have a laxative to go, but the past month I have had extreme diarrhea. Our bodies are all different and til we find our groove there will be a problem I think. I am upping the salads and veggies now so I hope it helps. Good luck to you. I have tried about 5 laxatives and the prune juice (yuck! LOL). Haven't found the right combination.

I'd take care of this sooner rather than later. While you will "go" much less frequently now (you aren't eating any solids), two weeks is too long. IMHO I'd stay away from the fruit juice, it's just empty calories and a real laxative will work much better. Try Milk of Magnesia, Senna, Dulcolax or similar. Calling your doctor is a good idea.

Are you still on pain killers? They are terrible on Constipation.< /p>

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
