Am I the only person who wasn't given a pre-op diet?

Recommended Posts

It seems like everybody on this site has been told to go through a rigorous pre-operation diet but me. I have to ingest nothing but fluids for the last 24 hours before surgery, and that's it. Nothing about shrinking the liver or anything like that. I'm going to the Barix clinic in Ypsilanti, MI, where bariatric surgery is all they do, so I assume they know what they're doing. Still, I feel a little nervous that my instructions were so different from others'.

I wouldn't worry about it, I don't think anyone has decided yet what the correct pre-diet should be. I hope one day it will be universal ( a bit like the treatments for cancer now, its global).

Good Luck for the Op.

I've seen lots of other people with pre-op instructions similar to yours. Don't worry. And here's my totally uncalled for 2 cents -- I'm not saying don't question your surgical team. You should absolutely ask them any questions you have! But you trust them to cut out the vast majority of a very important organ in your body -- I wouldn't second guess them based on what you see internet strangers are doing or not doing. They should have a good idea of what works best for their surgical practice and patients. Do you believe that they do?

One of the commitments I made to myself at the outset of my process is that I would follow my surgical team's instructions and not try to construct different or better rules for myself, either more lenient, stricter, or just different. Second guessing my doctors about how to get healthy never worked for me before and so I am not doing it anymore -- although I do ask them lots of questions to help me understand better! But even when I don't understand, or don't find myself agreeing with their rationale, I remind myself that I placed my trust in them and I am going to follow their plan for me. Good luck!

No Dr prescribed prep diet here but I did it anyway. My surgeon said its for shrinking a fatty liver to reduce chances of puncture but that my liver wasn't fatty enough to worry. There are so many psychological things to deal with post-op that letting go of food psychologically prior to surgery is like an act of kindness.

I have surgery scheduled in 2 weeks, I was also only given a day before preop diet. I am going to a bariatric COE in Indiana so they know what they are doing. I did question them to be sure.

I am scheduled for April 14. My surgeon requires the 2 week liquid pet op...except for me. I went for my final visit and he told me not to do it. Who am I to question the professional? Lol. I have to do the 1 day before liquids

I had to have my band removed, and I was sleeved at in one surgery. My stomach had prolapsed into my band and I was struggling to keep any amount of real food down. I was able to eat, but it was 50/50 on it staying down. My surgery was approved on May 7th, and my surgery was done the morning of May 8th. I got the call to be at the hospital at 5pm on the 7th, told nothing by mouth after midnight, and not to worry about anything else. I had eaten grilled fish, and a soft pretzel just before the office called me. I was living on gatorade, and smoothies with Protein boosters. They didn't have any issues with the size of my liver, and I healed just fine. I did exceptionally well with my sleeve, and my doctor couldn't be more pleased with my progress. So don't stress about the pre-op diet, like others have said, no two doctors have the same plan for before or after surgery. It's still being perfected. Just relax and be thankful you don't have to starve yourself prior to surgery.
