How easy does dilation and/or slippage occur???

Recommended Posts

I was banded 3/21/07, so I am 15 days post-op. I was on liquids for 7 days, then for 3-4 days I had creamed Soups, grits, Farina...that lasted until post-op day #10 or 11, when I started scrambled eggs, ricotta cheese, ham salad with mayo...I feel little restriction. Today I saw my surgeon and he said to eat really soft foods, consistency of scrambled eggs, but in his written literature it says we can have tuna with mayo, which to me is equivalent to egg salad or ham salad with mayo---yes??? Well, today, Holy Thursday, I made a traditional Polish Easter for my family, as I am going to Pennsylvania for Easter weekend...and I ate a small amount of warm, soft kielbasa, chewed exceedingly well, 2 mashed up hard-boiled eggs with mayo and some mashed up potato salad....again, feel no restriction, tolerated it all well. YOU EXPERIENCED BANDSTERS: DO YOU THINK I COULD HAVE DILATED THE POUCH OR CAUSED SLIPPAGE BY WHAT I DESCRIBED? :omg: I have no pain or reflux....I'm going to cool it down and pay better attention to the concept of SOFT foods FOR the next 2 weeks. Please give me your tutelage ! I love this website! :clap2:

I should leave the replying to more veteran bandsters than myself, like you requested, but as no one else has responded yet… I just wanted to pass along what I was told.

Okay, remember, I am NOT an experienced bandster – just banded 7 weeks as of Thursday. But it sounds to me like you ate an awful lot of food for the mushies stage if that was all at one sitting. That is not meant to sound judgmental!! This is all such a new way of thinking & eating, but we'll get used to it!

Both my doc & dietician said meals should be “about 1/4 to 1/3-cup of food at a sitting that lasts no more than 30 minutes” on the mushies stage. My dietician referenced “1 egg = 1/4-cup” as a rough estimate. Soft scrambled eggs, heavy-mayo tuna, egg, & chicken salads were all suggestions on my mushies diet plan. I’ve been on solids for a couple of weeks now & the recommendation given to me was not to eat more than a 1/2-cup of solids at a meal. If you are feeling hungry, don’t forget your Protein drinks & Water – they really help fill me up.

Review your materials & look at the guidelines your clinic provided for each stage…and call them if you can’t find the information you need! Every clinic is different, so my guidelines may very well not be the same as yours. But since you seem concerned about causing damage, I wanted to be of some help before you went to see your family. Hopefully you’ll get some replies from people with more experience, too!

I'm sure you haven't done anything to damage your band/pouch. You haven't had a fill yet so shouldn't be experiencing restirction yet anyway. I have only just started to feel a bit of restriction after my second fill! Just keep doing what you're doing and I'm sure you will be fine. If in doubt talk to your surgeon!

I could still eat large amounts of food until after my 4th fill....... there was so little restriction that the food would pass right thru my pouch. Now that I have restriction, I can tell a huge difference! I'm sure you're fine, but don't take those risks!!

Thats right Daffodils. I too have no restriction until my final 5th fill. Now Im banded to the max, and cant eat as freely and I would like. You will know u r full cos yr band will educate u, and no matter how much you want to chew the last piece, no matter how tempting the food is, if u ignore the signal, you will soon be throwing it all up (sorry I know too much info, but sometimes thats the best way!)

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
