3 days POST-Opp and having troubling with GAS

Recommended Posts

Hello everyone,

I had my sleeve operation on the 31st March and I am having sharp pains in my diaphragm. I am taking Buscopan and Nurofen and it stops the pain but my tummy keeps gurgling. I am assuming its the GAS. Drinking Water and shakes it so painful I makes my eyes Water. My two questions.... How long does it take for the Gas to pass (if that is what it is) and has anyone has trouble with swelling? My hands and arms and hands are swollen and it's worrying me!!

Gas can be very painful and I haven't been sleeved yet, but with another surgery I had it took days, I walked a lot to try to get it to move down, but it definitely hurts!

during surgery you were pumped up with air and given lots of fluids, of course you are going to be swollen. it takes anywhere from 7 to 10 days for that to go down. For some people it may take a full 2 weeks to notice any relief. Keep walking/ moving to release the gas and to help with the swelling. Drink lots of Water as well. The first two weeks are uncomfortable and difficult but it starts getting better by the third week. Surgery is wonderful but it's a process and you have through each stage ...patience will be your best friend. Happy healing.

The gas was the only pain I had after the first hours post op. I walked and stayed on the prescribed pain Meds until they stopped. It took about 5days total. The swallowing part took about 3weeks til it became normal feeling. Stay with it and it will get better. I tell people now the first 3 days I wondered why I did this and since then I wish I did it earlier. Stay with your program and good luck!!!!

I also had surgery on Monday! I have gas too but just keep walking. My issue is not consuming enough Water. How about you? I'm only drinking half a water bottle I'm terrified of getting dehydrated. Any advice anyone?

I was sleeved on the 31st as well and having all the same issues. I feel like I'm not getting enough Water or nutrients. Felt very weak in the shower today. The gas x strips really do help and getting up and moving to work it out.

I was also sleeved on the 31st! Day one an two were horrible but felt better yesterday. Took a shower this morning and feel better. Trying to get the liquids in is rough - the artificial sweetener is leaving a bad taste in my mouth! Yuck!

I'm finding it really hard to get the shakes in. I feel like there's an air bubble or something stopping me lol

I'm in day 2 post op and am experiencing the same pains. I am trying to walk at prat 15 minutes every 3 hours. The pains are definitely better. As for Water, I brought home the hospital cup that has markings in ounces and have been taking small sips all day. I'm approaching 48 oz for the day. Good luck and walk, walk, walk as much as you can.

The gas is awful. My surgeon gave me some Mylicon (yes the stuff for babies) and it worked wonders. However, the pain in your chest could also be gastric reflux as well. I ended up in the hospital about 10 days post-op because mine was so unmanageable. Give your doctor a call...no sense in you being so miserable. I had my surgery 1/27/14 so I am certainly not a sleeve expert yet but I believe it will be just fine t :0)

Try taking smaller sips, the gas and bubbly feelings got better after the second week. I make sure I'm sitting up for all drinks and eating and I have to walk a little after eating to help with the gas and I'm 28 days post op.

My surgery was the 31st of March and this as is real! But getting better daily. Getting this Protein shake down is not easy. I can only finish about half in a day. I do pretty good with my liquids though. Walking pretty good. He repaired my hiatal hernia, so I am still a little sore, but off pain meds. I know it is a process and these discussions always help me remember that! Thank you!

I was also sleeved 3/31! Yesterday was my first full day home and I got in about 50 oz of Water and part of a shake. Today I got in 64 oz of water (including some warm Decaf tea and some water with the squirt-in flavors) and 1 shake. I warmed the chocolate shake do it was like hot chocolate, but not too hot, and it went down easier. I also ate a few bites of pudding before taking meds, which helped. I haven't lost any weight yet though which is s little disappointing!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
