Recommended Posts

I just found out I will be using this after surgery. Trying to see if anyone has used one.

I see it advertised in the Bariatric journals and have seen them at trade shows. Supposed to be very effective for treating local pain after surgery. Please let us now if and how it worked for you!

I am a nurse in surgery here in the US, and I am the coordinator for robotic surgery. We use these pain pumps weekly on open incisions or surgeries that cannot be done laparoscopic. Now I have never talked to the patients post-op, but the docs swear by them for the big long abdominal procedures.

I hated my pain pump hateddddd it. I hate pain meds via IV period. They hit you so fast and wear off so fast and I just don't like the instability. Id rather take a pill and be good for 4 hours. I was so excited when they took it away.

I had a On-q pain pump post op ( I think some responses in this topic is causing some confusion, this is not a pca pain pump that the pt controls via iv, this is medication that is being infused directly into the belly via tiny long catheters that go directly into the abdomen) and I had good results with the right side that wasn't leaking, the left side wasn't in properly and leaking and I had significant pain there all night after surgery. The next day when the anesthesiologist came to remove the pump and catheters, she just kept on apologizing and saying that's why I had pain on my left side. If both sides were functioning, I would've needed no pain meds at all, my right side stayed pain free for 2 days after surgery and I truly think the on-q pain pump was the reason.

Then that is not what I had

If youre having that pump (the pca is different) does that mean you're having an OPEN surgery?? Then recovery will be much longer.. I know you were going to try to return to work after just a few days... I had the pca morphine.. after laparoscopic bypass It was fine but it made me a little nauseas and I could actually taste it. But, thank goodness for pain meds.

I had the on q pump and my surgery was laparoscopic... This is supposed to be a means so that you wouldn't need the use of a pca pain pump...

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
