If you're a bandster, chewing gum is supposed to be bad mmmkay? But some of us need gum - to help with boredom, food and smoking cravings. However, small particles of gum can still be swallowed even if you don't swallow the whole piece. If you notice you are having difficulty eating or drinking after you've had gum: drink a bit of vegetable, coconut or olive oil to break down the gum base and allow it to pass through your stoma.

The one time I tried gum, I got horrible stomach/gas pains. I must be one of those gum chewers who swallows a lot of air when I chew. So not more gum for me...it was truly a lesson learned. When I just need to chew something, (like right now), a bag of baby carrots does it for me.

The thought of swallowing it and getting it all gummed up scares the heck out of me….so no gum for me…plus my doc said no gum!

My doc said it was ok to chew gum. This is good information though, since I do tend to chew gum. Thanks!

Oh I am a GUM LOVER!!! I was chewing gum 3 days after my surgery! Yep I was! I took the hubby to the hospital and I was popping bubbles in the waiting room when our bariatric Dr. came out to tell him the surgery went well for the hubby.

He was laughing and said that's a no-no...then he patted my shoulder and said it's OK just don't swallow it :)

Sometimes I just need to chew it helps me think, and it's better then chewing on pen caps or pencils imagine if I swallowed one of those! (actually there were a couple of kids in elementary school that did that..and I could never understand how that happened....)

I love me some gum gum gum!!

So when I read that you weren't suppose to have gum, I laughed and though my gosh I'm not 5, I'm NOT going to swallow my gum......welll guess what ladies and gent.......about 6 months post op while setting at my work typing and chomping away, I took in a breath and down it went. I freaked out for like 2 days fearing what was going to happen. Thankfully I had NO issues but ever since then I still chew my gm but I guess the saying is true, I can't chew gum AND....at the same time:-)

I was told not to chew gum because it builds up extra gas in the tummy and that will cause gas pains....

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
