How long off for a physically demanding job?

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone. So I work in a hospital as a PSW (aka healthcare aide) and I am wondering how long I should expect to be of work for. My average day includes washing, dressing, toileting and transferring patients ...for 12 hours. I know everyone is different, but if some people in the nursing field could let me know how they did, that would be great!

Thanks people!

I know for 6 weeks we arent supposed to lift anything over 15 pounds. I work with big dogs that like to jump on me so I'm taking 8 weeks off.

I'm sorry. All I know is the 6 week rule. I'm a week out and with the pain I'm having, I hope 8 weeks will be long enough. I'm self employed so I need to get back to work, but not like this...

I was told no lifting for 6 weeks as well. No pushing heavier things either. We even had the discussion about carrying loads of laundry up and down the steps and mowing the lawn with a push mower.

Do you have some type of "light duty" or "restricted duty" status at work? When I worked for an airline that was an option. It meant we worked but didn't move luggage, didn't shut or open airplane doors etc.

I would have to speak with the organizational health department I suppose. Technically there is no modified version of my job, I am in most ways the 'grunt' of the healthcare industry. Which, for the record, is not a shot at other aides and/or nurses doing the same type, just a reality. :-)

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
