Hello everyone,

My name is Sasha and I'm in the process of getting my Journey started to have Gastric Sleeve Surgery. Right now in my Journey I am awaiting my appointment to meet with my surgeon for a consultation. I'm should explain the reason I would like to have this surgery..I'm 28 years old..Married..and mother to 3 children. So I need to be around for a while. I'm only 4ft 10 inches and I weigh 166 pounds. I know what your thinking.."Why would u need the surgery when you don't weight over 200 lbs" At first I was thinking the same thing, but when I look up my BMI, I'm in the morbidly obese section! For a person of my height I should weigh no more then 103 lbs. To top it off I have been living with type 2 diabetes, now that is cause for surgery. Along with diabetes, I'm struggling with Polycystic ovarian syndrome, high cholesterol, and depression. So my doctor suggested weight loss surgery. At first I wasn't for up for it, but I did some research and spoke with a few people who have had the surgery and the more and more I read about it I started to see reasons why this surgery would be perfect to me. I'm not sure if I will definitely be approved for surgery. Technically in order to be approved for Gastric sleeve surgery by your insurance your BMI needs to be 35 or over with 1 medical issue such as diabetes, high cholesterol, and other health condition that are aggravated by being overweight. Since technically my BMI is 34.69 I don't qualify but I have 4 medical condition that lie under the "exceptions" so my doctor says he's pretty sure they should approve it. So, I just have to wait for my appointment and present all my medial issues and see what happens! I would love to have conversations with anyone who is in the process of getting their surgery or have had their surgery that can offer any input or suggestions that may help me along my journey. I don't have a lot of support in my corner. My husband supports me and my Mother does, but a lot of people in my family are very against this surgery! I feel like in this group we are the biggest support for each other!

Thanks everyone!

Hi Sashii, We don't judge anyone in this forum and certainly wouldn't judge you for wanting VSG. Your doctor is way smarter than we are and if he suggested surgery for you, then we are here to support you. Diabetes is a serious disease and that alone is reason enough. It sounds like you have multiple comorbidities that would be improved with surgery so it sounds like insurance would approve but of course every insurance policy is different. I wish you much luck and can just say that its the best thing I've ever done. Wishing you good health for the future.

Welcome!!

I think anyone, any size that needs this surgery should get it. You should not feel like you have to convince anyone else when you know why you need this done. Rally your support team and stop mentioning it to the people who do not support you.

I have my fingers crossed for you, I hope you get approved.

I think that anyone who judges you for your decisions should mind their own business. :P I approached the idea of surgery back in October and due to listening to family, I backed out after my first appointment. I would have had surgery by now and am starting over with psych apt tomorrow, weight check and the first class. It took 5 more months of dealing with my size (I'm 5'4 and think I weigh about 230 but won't get on the scale at home until they weigh me tomorrow). I have two young children and want to be around for many, many more years. If it means I can finally live and be comfortable with my body after being overweight all of my adult life, then I know the ones that understand will truly support me. My husband and I are very close and that's all that matters to me. Best of luck and hope all goes well for you through this journey!

Hi, I’m new here. I’m currently on the liver shrinking diet. So far so good, but I have to say I haven’t found a protein shake I like. Anyone have any suggestions please? My surgery date is September 17th.

Fairlife Core are by far the best. They taste just as they are - chocolate milk. You can either get the 26 grams or the 42 grams (harder to find and more expensive). For straight protein look at Bulksuppliments.com ..they have really good whey proteins and offer auto ship plus they test for purity. No taste or smell...

Fairlife has strawberry, vanilla and of course chocolate. No more calories than other protein drinks. Stay away from Premiere, they're dealing with lawsuits due to not being honest about protein content.
