confused at first week

Recommended Posts

So I was sleeved Friday the 28th and got home yesterday. Once I had my leak check I was given fluids (thank the lord). The nurse and doctor said to only have 4 ounces in an hour which comes to one ounce every fifteen minutes. There is just no way to make quota for Water and Protein unless I did this 24/7. So its frustrating as I'm thirsty, etc. Then the onfloor nurse said take sips of Water in between those 15min. Then the doctor who took my drain out said no, that water is part of the 4ounces. I'm so thirsty and not feeling as "unhungry" as I was hoping to this soon.

Then today when the nurse checked on me she said take them as tolerated. So that seems to be a tremendous amount more that I can have as I'm tolerating quite well. I had one point last night where I got very nauseated and my mouth filled up with what I guess is mucus, it wasn't stomach acid that is for sure. So I waited longer till my next sip. So, at 3 days out am I supposed to have water more regularly? Protein Drink? I find everyones answer different.

During my 1st week post-op, I was eating about 1/2 sugar free Popsicle a day and drinking little sips of Crystal Light. I couldn't drink more than enough to wet my tongue or it'd come right back up. I got in as much Fluid as I could hold, but I really wasn't worried about it. I figured with all the Water and fat stored in my body, I could go at least a week and not be concerned. I wasn't getting in near the Water and calories/protein my doc wanted me to. But it turned out okay, day by day, I could eat a little more and drink a bit more.

You are right. For me, it was impossible to meet my quotas for Protein AND liquids. I was told to focus more on getting the liquids in because I can end up in the emergency room due to dehydration. Lack of Protein won't send me there.

What you experienced is called slimming. Your mouth over produces saliva and this foamy stuff just starts coming forward. This is usually due to taking too large of bites/drinks or not waiting long enough in between bites/drinks or not chewing the food thorough enough, but I'm guessing you are not dealing with the latter, at least not yet.

Myself, I just kept my room temperature gatorade (couldn't tolerate water) with me always and just sipped. My first couple days post I had Water, but discovered sports drinks worked better for me. Couldn't do cold ones, either. Had to be room temp. It does feel like you are drinking 24/7, but it may be what you have to do.

Just know that it does get better. This is some of the most difficult time. Just keep trying your best.

Yeah the slime surprised me as I only had 4 ounces of liquid an hour. I just find so much inconsistency in my instructions

Everyone's answer is different - our bodies are all different and the surgeons and NUTS are different. Just do the best you can following your surgeon's guidelines. That is about all we can do. There are many people here who had different guidelines than me and my husband, but keep the faith and you will be fine. Just make sure you are drinking so you won't get dehydrated. Good luck! Linda

Hi, I’m new here. I’m currently on the liver shrinking diet. So far so good, but I have to say I haven’t found a protein shake I like. Anyone have any suggestions please? My surgery date is September 17th.

Fairlife Core are by far the best. They taste just as they are - chocolate milk. You can either get the 26 grams or the 42 grams (harder to find and more expensive). For straight protein look at Bulksuppliments.com ..they have really good whey proteins and offer auto ship plus they test for purity. No taste or smell...

Fairlife has strawberry, vanilla and of course chocolate. No more calories than other protein drinks. Stay away from Premiere, they're dealing with lawsuits due to not being honest about protein content.
