Im thinking of surgery

Recommended Posts

I have been over weight most of my life, and I have been thinking about my options lately...I have lots of questions and I live about 4 hours from the tbnc I would love to go for a consultation, but I still don't know if this is what I should be doing. I am also concerned about cost...nothing I have been reading talks about the cost, does OHIP cover any costs, I don't want to get my hopes up to only realize that I can't afford this....

OHIP does not cover anything. TLBC is 16K as is Dr. Cobourn. I hear there is another clinic in Toronto doing it for 15K. There is also financing available.

I would suggest you look around this site - read everything you can before you make your decision.

Good luck.

Susan

Hi Maisieben if this surgery is something that you are thinking about I would for sure look into it and do the research. Like you I wasn't sure if it was for me but I weighed the options and read the posts on here as well as doing my own research. I choose the lapband and I have no regrets to this point. :)

It is a shame but this operation is not covered by OHIP. The surgery is pretty expensive at roughly $16,000 depending on where you go. The cost is a lot but your Dr's office can give you tips on financing if you are unable to afford the costs right off.

Good luck on making your choice. Everyone here is very helpful so if you have questions this is a great forum. :)

I paid $16,000 at TLBC and it was the best thing I have ever done. I am only two months out. I love it.

Maisieben,

keep reading... there's lots of info for you here. I attended the info session at TLBC, read lots of posts, read the info on the websites and talked to 2 friends who had it done before I made my decision to have it done.

Good news is that while OHIP doesn't cover banding (despite it being less invasive that by-pass) you can deduct the cost of the surgery on your income tax (there's quite a few posts about that too!)

Good luck with what ever you decide!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
