Three Weeks Without Weight Loss

I know this is a question that gets asked a lot on here, but I have a unique situation.

It's been three entire weeks since I've lost weight. The scale has been stuck at 290 pounds and hasn't budged.

I don't want to talk to my surgeon about this because his bedside manner is...I'll just say it's lacking and I'm already feeling bad enough for not losing the weight.

I work out at least 30 minutes every day. Either I run or lift weights. I drink Protein shakes to make sure I get in at least 200 grams of Protein every day. I'm consuming about 2,000 calories a day.

Please give an answer if you've been there or know what the real problem is. I don't want a bunch of people guessing what needs to change.

2000 calories is probably too much. Cut back 200 or even 400 calories for 3 weeks and see what happens

Yes I think 2000 is way too much in calorie intake. Also your meals should be mostly made up of protein! Try to stay away from carbs. Do you have a nutritionist you am call?

Wow, yeah... if I am reading this right you were just sleeved in December? I'm trying to wrap my mind around even being able to FIT that many calories and protien grams into my sleeve, even just a couple more months down the line. I know it does stretch a little as the swelling subsides, but THAT much? Yeesh, I dunno... that sounds like work!

Not a unique situation at all. Weight loss is not always going to be constant and everyone has plateaus from time to time. It's not really considered a stall until you've been stuck for 3+ months, so you've got some time before you should be concerned.

I agree that 2000 calories is a lot, especially as you are not working out more than average. That said, I don't feel qualified to give you the answer you are seeking as NO ONE here is qualified to give you much more than a guess. A clear and precise answer is something you need to seek out via your surgeon and/or NUT. ;)

I was sleeved just a few weeks before you and my NUT says I shouldn't be taking in more than 800 calories per day max. I know that sounds rough, but its not that bad.

I would reduce your calories by at least 1000 per day and cycle them throughout the week so you have some days that are significantly lower than your highest calorie day. I usually do roughly 500, 700, 900 then repeat. Its how I've avoided any weight loss stalls during this process and I lose a steady 3 pounds per week. :)

Too much Protein can also put on fat believe it or not..I would definitely speak to your nutritionist about and follow exactly what he or she tells you...that's what they're there for! Good luck!

I can tell you what guidelines my doc gave me, but I'm not qualified to tell you what to do - every situation is different. My doc wanted me to stay around 60 - 80 grams of Protein and 800 calories a day. It took me at least 6 months before I could eat that much per day. It was a least 11 months post-op before I could get in over 1200 calories a day.

Too many calories and stop weight training for a bit. If you're gaining muscle mass you won't know if you're losing fat, at least not with a scale.< /p>

I recently went through the same thing- 3 weeks hovering around the low 250's. I'm taking in about 1000 calories a day and 45-60g of Protein. I work out 3-5 times per week.

Finally, this week, the scale finally started moving. What did I do differently? Nothing, really. Plateaus like this are totally normal. That said, your calorie intake seems very high to me.

Keep in mind through your journey that you will continue to have stalls after you figure out the caloric/protein intake. I am over 4 months post sleeve and had a 5 week stall. I do not focus on the scale because I know with my intake it will go down eventually. Best wishes, you will get it right.

I did what Vogue suggested and cut back my calorie intake to 1600 and saw results immediately. My plateau broke the next day and the weight has been dropping off ever since.

I'm still working on getting in 200 grams of Protein a day. All the nutrition people I've talked to said that's the minimum of what I need to consume if I'm going to be doing weight training, and I definitely want to be doing weight training.

I'm also training for a half-marathon. I don't want to just be thin. I want to be buff. :)

200 grams of Protein is fine. If you get into heavy weight lifting and marathon training, you may find that you need to up your calories again. Your body will tell you.

      Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
      1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

        All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

      I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
