Pre-op vs. Liquid diet

Recommended Posts

I have seen several posters on these forums mention a "liquid diet", but my surgeon's office never mentioned anything about this. We are required to be on a 2-week pre-op diet, that will eliminate sugar and fat to shrink the liver. The only patients (in my surgeon's practice) that are required to be on a liquid diet are the gastric bypass patients, so I'm just curious about what all of your surgeons recommend?

Some patients will have an all liquid diet prior to surgery, some don't.

My doc's pre-op diet consisted of 2 Protein shakes and one "lean and green" meal per day. The lean and green meal consisted of 4-5 ounces of lean meat and some vegetables.

One thing you will find - many doctors prescribe different pre-op diets for their VSG patients. Also, post-op diets and the re-introduction of food differs from doctor to doctor.

Thanks for all the replies! I had a conversation with my NUT today and she said that our surgeons only require a low sugar/low fat / high Protein & veggie diet because that is enough to shrink the liver enough so that they can perform the surgery without complications. And she also explained the reason they ask the gastric bypass and switch patients to be on liquids 2-days prior to surgery is because since they are having organs re-routed, and they have found whole mushrooms (and probably other things) when they didn't require liquids only. Makes perfect sense and is a huge relief. ;)

Start my 2 week liquid diet tomorrow. Wish I had your doctor? I think this 2 weeks might be the worst of it? Hopefully.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
