My turn -- I've slipped

Recommended Posts

I just hated to read that you have a slip. You have been such an inspiration and so active on this website. Hopefully they can repair it. Do keep us updated and I will be thinking about you Monday. I will start a prayer chain right here right now.

Thanks, Kayford. It's much appreciated!

Does anyone have any ideas on why a band slips? Is it over extending yourself physically that makes it slip? Are there physical restrictions you need to follow to avoid complications?

Being that I am not banded yet I dont know anything about what it feels like.. BUT the RN talked to up about slippage and she said the surgeon will make like belt loops to hold my band in place so it doesnt slip BUT it can still happen. Since I am a self payer...this makes me really worry about what would happen if mine would slip or erode. My insurance wont cover ANYTHING...so I am wondering now if they would cover going in to take it out???:phanvan Gosh, best of luck to you and you are such an uplifting person.. you are so positive its so great and makes me happy just to read how positive you are. I would like to have just an ounce of your attitude...could you share please??? LOL...:)

Alex,

You will be in my thoughts and prayers and I'm adding you to our church's prayer list if that's okay. I pray the surgeon will be well rested, and steady hand and repair or replace your's for you. Congrats on the 30 BMI, that's great. For all of us that know you but worry about a slip as well, are there any signs you can give us to be aware of? Take care and good luck.

Hi Alex,

I am so sorry to here about your slipped band. You have been a wealth of information to so many of us even in this process. I do hope all works out and you are able to keep your band or be rebanded.

I go in next Friday for an Upper GI just because. I have bad allergies during this time of the year & I'm coming up on my 2 yr band anniversary so I just want to make sure everything is OK.

It appears that most start having trouble around this time so I am trying to take preventive steps with this process. Anyway, you take it easy and be good to yourself. My thoughts & prayers are with you.

Alexandra, I am so sorry to hear that your band has slipped and you have to go back in to surgery. I will be praying for you and the outcome you hope for. You are such an inspiration to us pre-ops. Take care!

Oh my gosh! That is truly terrible news! I feel like since I've been a member here (about a year and a half), every single person who I "know" (those who post alot) has slipped or eroded! It makes me wonder about the 1% statistic they give for slippage, and makes me fearful that eventually it will happen to me. My worst fear is not being able to keep liquids down.

You sound like you have a great outlook though, and hopefully they will be able to repair the slip.

Please do keep us contantly updated and we're all pulling for you!

Here I sit , myself 2 days out from surgery to FIX or reposition a "slipped" band and I really feel for you ! The news of a slipped band is devastating as you wonder "what did I do wrong?" and "can they fix it ?" I was short of my 1 year BANDIVERSARY, lost almost 100 pounds and then, BANG, in the EMERGENCY room with the TIGHTNESS FROM HELL ! I spent the night in the hospital and then was sent home to let my tummy calm down before surgery. I only had 1.2 cc fill in the 4cc band, but it slipped. Anyway, I went in for the surgery 2 afternoons ago, they got in there, and lo and behold, it had slipped back somewhat ! They finished re-positioning and then stitched it back up. I am so very thankful that when I woke up from the surgery and felt, my port was still there ! Cannot figure out what happened or why, but I am on the raod to recovery. I wish you the best and HANG IN THERE !!!!!

Thank you so much, everyone, for the kind thoughts and good wishes. I'm really very sanguine about this, for some reason that I don't quite understand. Part of me doesn't even feel like this is a problem at all! It's like, I have a mechanical device inside me that may require a tuneup at some point, and this is the tuneup. Yeah, surgery is scary in itself and yeah, making time for this in my life is a big hassle, but I have family and friends pitching in to help and I really did want a couple of days off from work anyway. ;-)

Kaybee, I'm glad to hear your surgery went well but sorry it took an ER visit to diagnose the problem. I'm lucky in that the symptoms I had were noticeable but not really disturbing or painful (though esophagitis is no fun). When I couldn't sleep in bed, night after night, I knew there was something more wrong than I'd experienced in the past.

Maybe on Tuesday I'll come back with a horror story, or have to say I eroded completely and there's no way I can ever have a band again, but I've explored those possibilities in my mind and know I can face them if they arise. And I really don't think anything like that will happen (especially with everyone here pulling for me!). The important thing is now, as it has always been, my health.

So I'll do what has to be done and keep moving forward. I'm just outrageously grateful I have health insurance for this, because otherwise I'd be in DEEP doo doo!! :)

When you have dealt with your DH's radiation, it makes us realize something like this slip, really is minor in many ways. I hope your surgery goes smoothly, and you get your VG band, so you can be comfortable with it. Prayers and good thoughts being sent your way!

Keep us posted as soon as you can, we will all be thinking of you Monday.

Kat

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
