I used primarily almond milk before my surgery. I had my surgery 3/21 and started the full liquids diet Friday, and am using almond milk for my shakes again with no problem.

Good luck!

I am also using almond milk for my Protein shakes. I think they recommend cows milk because it's higher in Protein.

I would just watch out for the sweetened versions. Some are quite high in calories.

Been an almond milk drinker for many years. My NUT said it's totally fine to continue drinking it pre or post op however she said she would prefer I use plain light soy milk since it has 8grams of Protein. Almond milk has just a couple grams of protein. She said the almond milk is fine to drink towards my 64 ounces of liquid goal but the protein content isn't high enough to be used for protein source. When I questioned couldn't I just add Protein Powder to the almond milk that would make up for the deficit in protein in the almond milk but my NUT said not so fast understand the body process protein from natural sources like milk, soy, lean meats ect far better than the protein we get from the protein supplements like Protein Shakes.

My dietician prefers regular milk because almond milk has basically no Protein. I really like the taste and consistency of almond milk in my shakes but I switched to Kroger carbmaster milk: 60 calories, 11 grams protein, 3 grams carbs. They also sell a vanilla carbmaster milk with the same numbers and a chocolate carbmaster milk with slightly higher calories and carbs -- but still lower than regular skim milk.

Thanks for all the replies. I may use it just for my shakes to keep my calories in check. I have no problem drinking regular 1% milk when I drink plain milk.

I also use it in my Protein Shakes. I use unsweetened kind, only 60 cals per cup. I actually only use half a cup of it and half a cup if Water so I don't add a lot of calories to my shakes. Makes them creamier.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
