Sleep Apnea and Sleeve Surgery

Recommended Posts

Anyone and everyone please help! I had my surgery consult and my doc said he wasn't requiring me to get a sleep study but as my insurance had already covered it I went ahead. sleep study revealed I have severe sleep apnea and now I'm supposed to wear the cpap machine but I have anxiety anyway and the thing sent me into a full blown panic attack and I fled the machine fitting sleep study. I'm going to keep trying but if I can't do this I'm afraid I won't be able to have the surgery. I emailed my surgeon for his thoughts but just really need some support from all of you. I've had such angst over this whole thing so please be gentle in your responses. Just get over it or you have to do this is not what I can hear right now. I assume my surgeon wasn't going to have me do this because he recognizes that obesity and sleep apnea go hand in hand. Anyone have similar experiences to share or words of encouragement? I'm just beside myself with this.

Thanks.

I to have sleep apnea, but couldn't use the CPAP because of my copd/asthma.

And anxiety with having something over my face, I felt like I was suffocating.

My lung dr did a overnight O2 saturation test on me and I've been on oxygen at night for over a year now. I did 6 months of 24 hr before using just for sleep. Maybe this would be an idea? I do feel more rested when I wake up while using it. I'm hoping my sleeping will improve when I have my wls. Good luck too you.

I have sleep apnea and I hated the mask at first. I felt like I couldn't breathe. So the doctor adjusted it so it goes from a 4 to a 12 gradually. Now I love it. It's weird, once I put the mask on, my body relaxes like it knows it's time to sleep.

When I had the WLS they told me to bring the machine in case I needed it during recovery. But all was fine and it stayed in the car.

I'm hoping I won't need it anymore once I get under 200 pounds. Along with the high blood pressure pills.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
