Dress size inflation

Recommended Posts

Anyone else found that they are fitting into tiny sizes that are much smaller than you know you should be?

When I was 20 and 140 lbs at 5'6" I wore a size 12. When I was 35 at 140 lbs I wore a size 10. Now at 53 and 145 lbs I'm a size 8. WTH?

Anyone who uses patterns and sews their own clothes sees this - those patterns use the old measurements. On the Simplicity site I am a size 18.

Of course, my favorite store is Chico's because their sizes are 0, 1, 2, 3. Read that as small, medium, large and xl. This is the only time I will ever be a size zero lol.

Ah....vanity sizing!

Twenty yrs ago I was 135 pounds and a size 8. Now I'm 145 and size 4.

However my weight is distributed differently now...I think muscle mass is pretty much the same due to current workouts.

But yeah besides vanity sizing everything is made with lycra or some kinda stretch material... Even jeans have it

Most definitely. When I got married 25 years ago I was 173 at 5'10" and a size 14 and XL. Now I am 194 and a size 14 and even fit into a size 12 dress pants. Size L tops fit also. At least there are more clothes that fit me now. It was hard to find clothes 24 years ago in size 14. Now I can find a lot in that size.

I was actually thinking of trying I my wedding gown to see the difference in sizing. It's the only thing I still have from that long ago to try on. I just don't want to face it. 4 kids since then!

Yes, there are so many more big girl clothes than there used to be. Lane Bryant was the only game in town for so long, and their stuff used to be hideous. No Venezia label and Cacique and cute styles like now. It was a lot harder to dress nicely back then if you were above a 14.
