Short term disability

Recommended Posts

Hi all!

I plan on using FMLA and short term disability for my surgery. Did anyone else take advantage of this? I really want to take 6 -8 weeks to fully heal and be able to get myself on a strict schedule to make sure i am as successful as possible with this. I work from home for a credit card company and its a very emotionally stressful and mentally taxing job. I commute 2 times a week sometimes just for change of scenery. What was your time off time frame and how would i go about asking my doctor for an excused 6-8 weeks off work. This is my first time ever in my life having surgery as well.

I used FMLA for my time off too. I was off 3.5 weeks but my doctor said I could go back in 2. I'm a paralegal, so I'm stationary but still stressful. It took me about 6 weeks to really feel myself again.

So it is possible for the doctor to give me the time off that i need? Really i could take 3 months but i think 2 months would more than enough to get my eating, exercising and mental state all under control. I am just afraid of what the doctor may say.

I work in a hospital. .do little bit of patient lifting. My doc office said 4wks. I just applied for FMLA last week for 4wks. .I really wanted 6-8 wks, but didn't know if doc would allow that or sign off on it. I feel this new life style is challenging enough learning our new way of eating. .and it should automatically be a 6wk off. I especially work nights, 12 hrs shift. I applied for FMLA, I'd short term disability a separate thing?..do I have to call the company that process our FMLA and tell them I want STD also?

I agree with you, i need this time to really get my eating and exercising completely under my belt so when i go back to work i feel ready. Ask ur employer i spoke with my boss and she gave me all the information i needed. I just wonder if my doctor would sign off on 2 months... Or even be willing to do 3 months if he knew i could take it. Does anyone know how to bring this up? Or the correct verbiage to use?

I took 8 weeks off. I started with 6 and got an extra 2. I am an RN so I needed the time to heal. I have to move around a lot in my job. I know people go back after 5 days extra good for them! I needed the time to get over the pain and get my energy level back.

Jealous. I'll be back at work 6 days after surgery. I sit so that helps, but oh is love a few weeks off!

Yes, I'm off for at least 4 weeks and it could be more if the doctor thinks I need it. I also used STD and FMLA.

My surgeon only approves two weeks off work unless there is a complication. My short term disability carrier would also only approve two weeks. I'm a HR Manager so I have an office position but it can certainly be highly stressful. If you can get more time off, take it! I'm still exhausted every day and I'm six weeks out.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
