My name is Chris and I am an 42 year old male who has battled weight as long as I can remember. As I have aged my weight has really slowed me down. I am just at that point of being pissed for allowing this to hold me back for so long. I have been aware of these procedures for years as I am an operating room nurse. Maybe ignorance is bliss when it comes to surgery. I am having my sleeve on April 17. I am very excited and honestly fearful of this journey but it is one I have to do. I am blessed to be having surgery in an operating room I run and at a hospital of friends. It is great reading the stories of others and not feeling so alone in this issue.

Hey Chris, 49 yr old male RT (Respiratory Therapist) from Detroit area here. You will do fine with the surgery. Im 9 wks post op and doing wonderful. The one thing I have to say is eat slow. Being a hospital employee I think we tend to eat our meals fast. Afraid the beeper will go off and lunch is over. Thats been my biggest issue. As for the plus side of my sleeve: Im down nearly 50 lbs since surgery 2/3/14 and almost 90 since December (pre op diet) Im off of 3 meds of my handful, Ive lost 31 total inches off my body and my BMI is down nearly 12 points. Clothes that didnt come close to fitting 4 months ago now hang on me. I guess I need to dig deeper into my closet. lol. You will rock the sleeve, youve come this far. As for any issues you may have , hang tight, ask us questions and things get better from day one. Just hang tight.

Hi Chris! I am an ER nurse 44yo female also with a life long weight battle. Last summer I spent five weeks in the hospital with asthma, CHF, diabetes and hypertension. I was working myself to death and topped the scales at 337 pounds. I knew I had two options ...change my ways or plan my funeral. Today I am 7 weeks post-op VSG. I weigh 252. I am off all meds except asthma controllers and lasix ...the includes insulin! I haven't felt this good since my teens! The surgery is challenging and can be painful but it is so worth it!!! It literally saved my life and it will be a huge help for you too in your Quest to get healthy! Good luck tomorrow and I will be saying a nurses prayer for you! We will make room for you here on the losers bench! Teri

Best of luck on your journey,I'm also a 42 year old male, several years ago I was gonna get the lap band but chicken out 1/2 way through the process, then this past summer / fall I was at my highest weight and nothing I did seemed to work, so I opted for the sleeve had procedure in jan and my only regret was waiting so long, at almost 4 months out, I feel great the last time I weighed in about a month ago I was down to 230, not sure where I'm at now, don't want to live by the scale all I know is I have to keep adjusting my belt and buy new clothes. I exercise 4/5 days a week mostly cardio, I can't remember the last time I felt this good. The hardest part in my opinion is the pre-op diet, after that it's all down hill, just follow you drs advice.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
