Self Pay and Discouraged

Recommended Posts

I am getting so discouraged. I am mentally and physically exhausted from being overweight. My insurance company has an exclusion clause, so I must pay for my surgery. My dilemma is finding a hospital with financing. I am in the Atlanta area, and I have found a couple of very reputable doctors who have financing available, but the hospital does not. That means, I must come up with $10,000 for the hospital before I can have the surgery, and that is just an impossibility.

Has anyone else had this issue? Suggestions? I just feel so trapped in this body....

I too was self pay. I went to Mexico for my surgery and paid 5200.00 + air fare. To me this was a great price. I have no regrets and love my sleeve. That being said, I would recommend researching alternative financing or finding a hospital who will take payments. Also, have you thought about care credit? They do medical financing.

You can do this...I have faith in you and things will work out for you. Good luck.

I am also headed to Mexico tomorrow actually! Surgery is tomorrow! I went with Dr Fernando Garcia... 4300 dollars plus airfare... Can't beat it! I have done my research and he is a very reputable doctor. I went through a company called Ready4Achange.com

Me too nona, I love Dr. Garcia and Ready4Achange.com. Gammy, the reason my surgery was more expensive than nona's was due to my BMI, which was 53-54. Good luck nona, have a safe journey.

I took out a loan on my husbands retirement. It was 3% interest. They cut us a check in a week. Payments are taken directly from his paycheck and all the interest is paid back yo his retirement. No credit check, it's already your money.

Hi there...I was also self-pay and I found a surgeon in Boca Raton that only charges $10,500 for the gastric sleeve. Dr. Shillingford is board certified and the facility is a center of excellence. The price included everything! You can check out his website or call their office for more information if you'd like. Good luck to you!

i took out $5k from my retirement as well and im using Dr. Q in Mexico! My insurance (kaiser) has too many other stipulations n hoops to get approved and since i dont have any complications other than just being fat i decided to research (over a year) and choose this route. my girl used the same dr last Nov so i went off a referral. The surgery cost me $4250 plus airfare

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
