when is it too much protein?

Recommended Posts

I was really bad the last few weeks (on vacation!) and was at a stall. I definitely know it was diet related. I wasn't much of a tracker, but since getting back I've tracked religiously and noticed that i'm getting anywhere from 100-120 grams of Protein in a day. and that's with about 1100 calories a day. is that too much? I'm not due to see my doctor for another few weeks and I'll definitely ask the nutritionist when i'm there, but i'd like to get some feedback. as always, thanks! you guys are the best!

Hi Chelsi

I was told to have 100 gr Protein minimum per day.

Your calorie count is high at 1100 for just 100 gr protein.

My 100 gr protein comes in at 600 calories. (Of course I eat other things in addition)

Are you eating cheese? I do not. calorie to protein ratio too high.

If you'd like more details on what I eat let me know.

What does your meal plan look like? I can't wrap my head around 100 G protein at 600 calories.

Maybe I read it wrong.

I thought all 1100 calories were just Protein calories.

Oops.

I eat cheese, but not really a lot? I usually have a cheese stick as a snack some time in the evening and a slice or two with lunch rolled up in cold cuts. I would love to know how your typical meal plan goes, if you wouldn't mind! Thank you so much!

breakfast: homemade fruit smoothie w yogurt and Protein powder 31 gr Protein 173 cal

lunch: quiche 15 gr protein 140 cal

dinner: chicken breast 25 gr protein 180 cal

3 pm & 8pm 1/2 ea premier shake from costco. 30 gr protein 180 cal

For my sweet tooth I make unsw pudding w 4 scoops unfl Protein Powder and freeze into 8 popsicles so each one has 15 gr protein and super delish. Those suckers will kill any sweet craving.

If I have chicken at lunch the calorie count goes way down at I put prosciutto and ricotta and grated cheese (gasp) in the quiche.

cheese is just too high in calories. If you want to decrease your calories, get your Protein from other sources. That said one does want a certain amount of fat in their diet.

Just my two cents but I'm not addicted to cheese in the least though I do like ricotta and feta and they are much lower in calories.

I think your Protein and calls are good. My dr said 1200 yesterday with 90-120 protein so you are right on target.

My doctors recommendations is 60-80g of Protein per day so when I noticed I was really going over that, I got sort of worried. I'm still going to ask him because I know I should be sticking to his program since he's my surgeon, but I'm glad to know that other people blow that guideline out of the Water too, LOL. And that some other doctors recommend higher intake.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
