Can I drink from a straw? Six weeks post op

Recommended Posts

Can I drink from a straw yet? I'm six weeks post op and would love to sip my cold drinks from a straw. Of course no carbonation..

This is one of those things that you will get a different answer to. For me, my surgeon was fine with it. About the only thing I DON"T drink from a straw is coffee and wine.

Some will say never, ever. coffee, alcohol and carbonation are other things that is debated. There are lots of folks that are banned forever from all the above. My only no no is carbonation. I can live with that.

I'm a year out now and I can safely say my sleeve has not exploded, stretched or any other bad thing from using a straw since a couple weeks post op.

That is me, though, I will always say follow your surgeons direction. :)

Good luck to you! You are gonna love your sleeve!

I was never banned from drinking with a straw, just warned to be careful how much I drank in one swallow. It takes a while to learn how much you can safely swallow and get used to drinking smaller amounts and then make it an unconscious habit.

I am thinking that using a straw would cause no problem if you do the same as when you sip a glass of Water - sip, no gulp! Take a sip from the straw and wait a bit to see how it feels. Pay attention to your body, just as you have already learned.

I found an awesome 32 ounce insulated Bubba cup at Target over the weekend. It comes with a straw, but I took it out and use it how you would if you were drinking a hot beverage. It closes shut for travel. The best part is the insulation keeps the ice frozen for hours and hours and the cup doesn't sweat. I preferred straws but with this thing, I almost don't miss them! I think it was around $14

They told me no, but because Im not a goo listener I tried it once and it made me so bubbly and full feeling, it made me feel sick. I'm six weeks post op too and I'd advise u don't even try it

I never stopped drinking from straws. Except that post op, I was a bit more careful about swallowing from it with air (which never happened)

My surgeon says no til 8 weeks post op. I totally forgot at 5 weeks post-op and was drinking my Biggby Iced Decaf Non-fat Mocha Mocha with one when I realized I wasn't supposed to. I texted my hubby and he laughed. I ended up continuing to drink it and didn't have an issue. I was just careful. I prefer drinking with a straw.

I've been drinking my Water from a straw the last two days and no extra gas for me. I'm actually drinking more water now because of it. Yay for me!!

I found that using the straw lets me take in more Water (my biggest problem post op has been no enough water) I have yet to have an adverse reaction. Everyone is different though, and as far as harm to your sleeve, some surgeons have no issues with straws, so I doubt it will hurt you.

Best of luck!!!

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

The 14th was my day. I am home and recovery is going pretty smooth. They even let me walk out of the hospital. Picture of me in recovery curtesy of my boyfriend lol.

Neat you have a pic of this day! I was sooo happy to get my surgery. It was well worth it! And I'm not even near my goal. I had surgery Dec. 2!
