Is my diabetes under control now?

Recommended Posts

To say that my weight loss journey has not been remarkable is untrue. I have lost a total of 167 pounds since starting. I have lost 123 pounds since surgery. I started out on an insulin pump and so insulin resistant that I was pumping U-500 insulin. Starting last Friday when my fasting blood sugar was only 90 I decided to curtail insulin for a few days to see how my blood sugars would run without it. I am happy to say that the highest blood sugar reading I had since Friday was 143 and that was the highest. So I think I will simply monitor my blood sugar and see if I can kick the insulin habit for good. I can't tell you how happy my life is since I've gotten my weight under control. I had years of being out of shape and obese. Once all of the fat went away, I was left with literally nothing but skin and bones. So naturally it will take a while for me to get in shape but I am going to be realistic and realize that I am a 60 year old man with a heart condition so the 5k's are totally out of the question but I intend to start light weight training and some cardio and hopefully I will be a buff old fart some day.

Amazing achievement! Excellent the way our efforts are paying off! I would be completely shocked if your doc wanted you to consider any meds at this point for blood sugar control, but as a medical professional myself, I would definitely consider calling your doc's office and let your doc's nurse know what great progress you've made. I'm certain they'll want to Celebrate with you, but if they want to get one last a1c or other test, it will only confirm everything you already believe to be true.

Personally, tho, I believe you have rid yourself of one nasty disease!! Congratulations!!

I have a follow up with my doctor in a few weeks and will get my A1C checked then. My Endocronologist and I have a very trusting relationship. He has confidence in my blood sugar control and my insulin intake. For the last 4 months I was only taking 1/2 of my daily dose of Lantus which is supposed to be only a insulin with a 12 hour active time. So i'm not really surprised that my sugars are normal. I will follow up though for sure.

Thanks for the reply, Mark

I hope that you have the same results that I have. My surgeon is pretty amazed with my weight loss success. I am down to 218 from 387 in 8 months. He says that my weight loss is more in line with a person that has had a gastric bypass and not a gastric sleeve. But I have been religious in my accurately following dietary restrictions, recording my food intake and following my doctors orders. I have not been taking insulin for about 3 weeks now and my blood sugar has been 85 to 90 every morning when I get up. It does go up to around 140 during the day but my fasting blood sugar is perfect. Can't wait to see what my A1C is. I wish you the best of luck in your weight loss success.

I have an update on my A1C. I had my PCP check it last week and unfortunately my A1C has risen from 5.9 to 6.6. I have been monitoring my blood sugar two hours after eating and I really isn't rising very high at all. So I will keep monitoring and wait to talk to my endocrinologist. I hope that I don't have to go back on insulin but if I do, it won't be much. I definitely don't want to risk my overall health just to get off insulin right???

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
