Hi all, I'm sharon & am thinking about having surgery. I'm doing a lot of research & all the information out there can be a bit overwhelming at times & leaves you with more questions than answers. i am finding the forums great as hearing from people who have had the op is an amazing source of information & hearing about the mental/emotional side of things is so important.

I'm from New Zealand, any other kiwis out there???

Hi Sharon -- welcome aboard! I learned so much here reading and asking questions. Started research last June and had my surgery in November. Four+ months out and so happy with my decision.

Re: NZ, never been but would love to travel there one day. You must be in summer now?

WELCOME! Had my surgery back in september and am happy with the results and the way I feel!

There is a lot of information out there and a lot of opinions out there about all types of WLS….do your research and weigh both the pros and the cons….and be sure to find a doctor you are comfortable with who will answer ALL of your questions, no matter how many you have and how silly they may be….that is important (at least it was to me).

And yes, seeing the scale number go down is an amazing feeling but there is some emotional aspects to WLS. I think everyone has different reactions to it….as long as you look yourself in the mirror and honestly address what you are feeling/going through and seeking help if you need it, you can make it through in a positive way!

Wishing you all the best as your pursue this amazing journey…keep us posted!

Not a kiwi. More of a grapefruit (Texas). Welcome.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
