Struggling with 2 week liquid - Surgery 3-26-14

Recommended Posts

A week and a half into the 2 week liquid diet pre-op for my surgery on the 26th. Feeling so tired, having difficulty concentrating at work and feeling very down. From what I have read and heard, the liquid diet after surgery is not as difficult as you don't feel hungry? Hoping this is true, as I cant imagine feeling like this for a month.

The liquids before were unpleasant at best for

me but they did get better with time. Hang in there your time is almost here.

Sounds funny to say, but I am looking so forward to starting my liquid diet....means my surgery will be scheduled. But, I can definitely feel your pain too. This will be a revision, so I have done it before. Try doing something to take your mind off the hunger....word puzzles, Sudoku, etc. I cant seem to eat and read or do puzzles or be on the computer. So keep those hands busy, and I will be praying for your time to pass quickly! Stay strong, you CAN do it!

It is much easier post op. I looked forward to every new phase but it felt doable. Good luck- it is totally worth it!

My doctor says I will have to do a 3 day liquid diet, but I see alot of people on here saying they have a 2 week liquid diet. Does anyone know why there is such a difference in the lengths of time? Has anyone else been told they only need to complete a 3 day liquid diet?

@

Each Dr will have a different plan for his/her patience. They might tell you 3 days now, but do not be surprised if that changes after the surgery.

I have been into surgery twice for the gastic bypass and each Dr gave slightly different directions on diet after surgery.

Good Luck

Cindy

Can I ask you a question...do not feel obligated to answer.

Why did you have to undergo the surgery twice?

Also, I am talking about the pre-op liquid diet phase...after surgery he is suggesting 2 weeks

@ cathleenann,

I guess i was lucky, i had 2 weeks of two shakes one meal before my surgery. I can say that after surgery liquid diet got old too, but look on the bright side the surgery will be done and you will have the tool for a new life.

If you are doing the shakes now, play around with them to find mixes that you like. Remember sugar free chocolate Syrup, sugar free pudding/jello (dry mix added to the shake) and extracts do wonderful things to a blan shake.

I personally get the vanilla shakes and change the flavor to what my mood is now. My surgery was September 2013 and i still drink the shakes. I actually like the ones from Bariatricadvantage. And for extra Protein i get powders?utm_source=BariatricPal&utm_medium=Affiliate&utm_campaign=CommentLink" target="_ad" data-id="1" >unjury to add to the shake (un flavored).

I went in for the surgery the first time in 2012. Once on the table and opened the Dr found that the veins going to my liver were 'plump' and he would not do the surgery. He told me he was afraid i would bleed out. I also had cirrhosis of the liver, which i did not know at the time.

It took a few months to find out why i had cirrhosis and to find another surgeon who could and would do the surgery. I was advised to go to a teaching hospital and someone who had plenty of experience doing this surgery. Dr Murr was the choice. He had his own hoops for me to jump through and i had the surgery done September 2013.

I say twice because my insurance company ended up paying for it twice and i went into surgery twice. It is a little funny now. I had an "East" coast Dr and a "West" coast Dr.

Does that make sense?

I struggled also with preoperative diet but glad I stuck with because that was one less incision he had to make. I had my surgery with Dr.Garcia-Tijuana a week ago

2 weeks due to my BMI being high. I'm doing pretty good, a little nausea but nothing serve. No pain, little soreness to incision sites. Start full liquids tomorrow. Down 8 since surgery 3/17/14. Total 20lbs

I have also wondered about all of the vastly different pre-op requirements. I think one of the main goals is to shrink the liver and to cleanse the liver of carb build-up. (That's not scientific enough, but I think that's the gist?) Almost always these pre-op diets result in some weight loss, and the body will heal better with as little weight as possible. So, I think it mainly serves two purposes. Why the vast difference? I'm not sure! Mine seems pretty reasonable so I didn't balk too much. Just low carbs, lots of Protein, and Clear liquids the day before surgery. Good luck!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
