A Funny Realization

Recommended Posts

Since my sugery I have been very focused on losing weight. I exercise and I pretty much follow the rules as far as eating. I eat very low carb and have stayed away from sweets like Cookies, cake, donuts, etc. I eat no bread, no Pasta, and rice about once or twice a week and in small amounts.

At my last visit to the doc, my blood sugar and A1C were good, so she said I could stop taking Metformin. Which was awesome.

So, this past week I was really sick. I had a terrible head cold. I ended up eating more calories than I usually would, but I didn't go crazy. I bought what to me was a treat, some Kale and Pine Nut Orzo salad. It was so good. It was the closest thing to Pasta I've had since December.

I took some to work the other day and had it for lunch. After lunch, I was going around acting silly and making people laugh like I usually do, but this time I noticed I was almost bouncing off the walls. Clapping my hands, singing, dancing, acting a fool. And then I realized....the carbs.

It made me remember how before I changed my diet, I would eat a big lunch full of carbs and sugar. I would be lethargic for about half an hour after lunch as my body digested that big meal. Then my blood sugar would spike and I would be crazy hyper for an hour or two. And then would come the 3 o'clock crash where I would eat sweets or more crappy carbs and a soda to recover.

Wow. I am so glad to be off of that rollercoaster.

It was something I never really thought about before and it was interesting to recognize how strongly food can affect your mood.

Carbs are my nemesis, too! A year and a half without bread, white Pasta, sugar, flour, and white potatoes for me. Two years without soft drinks...... My body is VERY HAPPY! Glad you had your eye opening experience!!!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
