lark60 431 Posted March 22, 2014 I have just started having a new problem and wanted to know if anyone else had experienced this after VSG. For the past 2-3 days I have been having mid back pain (not really the back muscles but deeper) and the pain is like an electrical shock that pulses for a few seconds. At first the pain seemed random. Today I noticed the pulsations start seconds after I swallowed a bite of food. I waited for the shocks to stop and took another bite of food, chewed longer than usual and swallowed. The pulsating shocks started up again. The only way I can describe this sensation is like someone is jabbing me at the lower rib area on either side of my spine with electrical shocks that pulse for a few seconds. The pain actually causes me to sit up straight (hurts worse if I am sitting with my back against a chair) Movement does not affect the pain, drinking is ok and I cannot reproduce the pain with pressure at the area of my back that hurts. At first I suspected kidney problems but I am working on staying hydrated and do not have any other signs of a kidney issue. Since the pulsations are with eating food, I am concerned the pain is from the stomach but not sure why I would be feeling this in my back. Anyone else have a similar experience? NORCALRN 60 Posted March 22, 2014 I am thinking maybe nerve irritation? vagus nerve? Sometimes after weight loss gallbladder issues arise. Esophogeal spasams also can radiate to the back. Either way, check in with your doctors. good luck. sounds like you are doing great other than this new issue...post a follow up if you get a moment!
resipsa89 28 Posted October 22, 2014 Hi @@lark60 did you ever find out the cause of this back pain? Im laying here in bed and I can't even sleep because the pain is so bad. I'd love to know what your solution was!
mrsbailey921 117 Posted October 25, 2014 i have that EXACT pain...since the birth of my 5th daughter! i do believe it is related to anesthetic and not your sleeve at all. in my case, the needle and attempts at anesthetizing me have left me going through those exact same sensations, that i call "pain pings". it is odd, but for me...when i get startled or frightened, they come and "zap" me! i breastfeed my daughter, and when she got her teeth, she nipped me. the nip startled me, and straight up my back came a pain ping. i had never had them before delivering my baby...and now i suffer from them. i am hoping they go away but so far no luck. i havent had my WLS yet so it cant be from that. i am 100% sure my pains (which are JUST like yours) are a result of the delivery of my baby (which physically, is similar to surgery in many ways!). hoping we begin to feel better. mrsbailey921 117 Posted October 25, 2014 oh! and one reason i am adamant about my own weight loss surgery is because i notice, the weight from my midsection (stomach) is pulling me forward...and my back is now aching SO much, and when those pings come...my back begins to ache and the pings are worsened. i do believe if i am able to get some of this excess weight off the FRONT of my body, my back will feel better and maybe some of the ping pains will be eliminated. lark60 431 Posted October 28, 2014 Sorry I haven't been online for some time (internet issues). The pain seemed to resolve on it's own for me. As for back pain related to giving birth, I never had an epidural with any of my 4 children so I don't think that was the cause for me. Since loosing the weight, I do notice that my posture has changed and I have to work on core muscles for better back support.
