I went to he doctor on Wednesday to confirm I wanted the sleeve. While waiting the the waiting room I had a very informative convo with patients of my doc who'd already had the procedure. Anyway, as we are talking a younger girl comes up and joins. As this young lady is talking I hear her say she was 358 and has lost 70lbs....yay right? Well as she was telling the group some held a strawberry pop, hot cheetos and a brash of peanut m&m's in her hand. She was not accompanied by anyone else do this junk had to be hers. Wtf yall!!!!! This was very discouraging. I want to get away from these eating habits yet she is proving its possible. And so I was reminded....THE SLEEVE IS JUST A TOOL!!!

I'm with you - I don't want to be that girl! And thanks for sharing because this will be something I can recall in the future to put me back on track. We need to nourish our bodies with the little food we will be able to eat. I'm going to give it everything to stay on track.

This is going to sound cold, but when I see (or hear of) something like that, I just think to myself, so that's why the average excess weight loss for the sleeve is 60% not 100% - people like her are dragging down the average, and I'm going to be on the other side of it.

And to be completely honest sometimes I think the same thing when I see people posting here about how they are eating pizza and sandwiches and Oreos three weeks after surgery.

You just rang the bell! Pick anything from the top shelf! :D

WLS only changes the body, it doesn't help with the fat in the head.

I agree with @@Bufflehead

People eating pizza and sandwiches weeks out sounds plain DANGEROUS! The highest chance of a leak is in the first couple of months post op as the sleeve heals. Having a leak isn't just a complication to get over and get on with your life... it's really serious and could mean months in hospital, or even death. I genuinely do not understand why people would take a risk with bread and pizza at the stage. Very worrying.

Eating Oreos at 3 weeks out is clearly not a good idea as they are high in fat and the devil's food (aka sugar!). However they're probably not as dangerous for the sleeve as if eaten slowly with drink I can see how they are "almost" liquid (as they turn to liquidy paste in your mouth).

I am preop and preparing for my postop life by reading and learning as much as I can. At this stage I simply can't imagine eating pizza or bread at 3 weeks as I am so scared of a leak. My surgeon is super-cautious and recommends 3 weeks liquids, 3 weeks pureed food and then 3 weeks soft foods with well cooked veg, and only then gradually introducing harder vegetables and fruits.

...And to be completely honest sometimes I think the same thing when I see people posting here about how they are eating pizza and sandwiches and Oreos three weeks after surgery.

I like your doc. This is not a diet. It is a permanent proposition. This surgery lays a new foundation for the rest of your life. Sloppy foundations make for wrecked houses.

We need to give time for quality workmanship. Let your body do it's job. Solid healing time pays off.

The same goes with your exercise program. Start slow, no pain. Add a little bit as time goes on. Consistency, not speed, conquers fat and ill health.

This was a departure for me. I always pushed it too fast and ended up injured. No more.

That is one reason I do not think some young people are ready for WLS. They are going to continue to eat that junk, including soda and french fries. Notice I said "some" young people. There is nothing magic about surgery, you still have to make choices.

I joined BariatricPal in 2008 & I FINALLY made the descision to have WLS!! I'm so excited & not sure what I need to do to get the ball rolling, but I made an appointment with my PCP for 7/19. It's a start I guess.

I joined yesterday when I was struggling with this preop diet...
It typically comes and goes, the hard times and easier times. I'm on day 6 of 14  shakes, water, sf Popsicles and jello. And I might actually be losing my mind. But, oh dear lord has the fear set in. Not about the surgery itself, but life afterwards. If I feel this crappy on the preop diet, am I going to feel like this forever after?
I know most of the answers are no, not forever. It might be worse after for a while, then get better. I know it's a more of a mental challenge than physical after the first couple weeks of healing. I get all of that. But I'm starting to feel scared about losing myself afterwards.
It might be my hormones or desire to chew something salty talking.. It may go away soon or tomorrow.. I can hope, anyway. But right now.. The fear is real.

And this liquid diet can bite me.

Fear is normal, but if it makes you feel any better, I'm 4.5 months post-op and the pre-op diet was by far the hardest part of the whole process. There will be challenges and a lot of new things to learn, but I can honestly say at this point I feel so much more "back to normal" and was even able to go on a week-long vacation with my kids without stressing over it. It's so worthwhile.

@NickelChip This actually does make me feel better! Thank you so much! After the onslaught of Covid, we've all had to deal with a "new normal", so I know it's possible. It's just the fear and frustration in this moment that makes me question if I can find another "new normal" afterwards. The thought of just a few more months seems daunting some times, but I really do appreciate input and real experience. I'll use that to get me through for a few more hours! LOL. Thank you so much! And I'm glad everything is going so well for you! ❤️

I started my 10 day pre op diet yesterday I need flavor!! I'm not big on the chocolate protein shakes so I just got to use up what I have was thinking about freezing it to make it like a ice cream so its something I can chew a little. Idk this is hard but I know I can do it just need to find new things to try

You can try. I've read other people have had good results with protein-shake popsicles, etc. My personal experience with it? Sucked.

I tried making 'fudgesicles' with a couple different flavors of a premade shake, as well as a protein powder I blended myself and all of them came out revolting? The powder ones, all the protein sunk to the middle; the premade shakes, the popsicle had a disgusting texture and the protein seemed to leave a weird fluffy film on the outside? I couldn't stomach it.

Maybe look into flavoring additives? I was able to have sugar-free coffee /soda syrup flavorings, sugar-free drink flavorings and baking additives like almond, rum or pepperment extract. The extracts helped me the most as they added no extra sweetener.

On the other hand, if you can get your hands on an unflavored/unsweetened protein powder, the syrup flavorings are perfect. I love to use Boost "Just Protein" (which is unflavored) with milk and a Chai-flavored sugarfree syrup.

        Good luck!
