How do you know if food is stuck?

Recommended Posts

I had a creamy Tomato Soup (thick, cheese based) about 2 pm. It had corn and tomtoes in it but I did only ate the soupy stuff. (I'm supposed to be on mushies right now.) I must have over-eaten. It feels heavy in my chest still, about 5 hours later. Just under my rib cage. I feel very full.

I don't think it's stuck, but how do you know for sure? It feels like it is working its way down, but very slowly. I am sipping some warm Water right now. I am surprised at how full I still feel and while it's good to be satisfied, I wondered if this is normal or if the food is stuck...

I think you probably just over-did it a little. I over ate once during mushies and I felt yucky for hours. But, when something is actually stuck...it usually feels different for me. It's an intense, heart pounding sorta thing and yours sounds like a ehhh, my pouch is too full kinda thing! I'm guessing you'll be feeling better soon. Good luck!

When food gets stuck you have a sharp and sudden pain in your chest area. If I hadn't read about it before it happened, I would have freaked out!

You'll know when it happens.

I just had my first stuck epidsodes.....two in two days! In my case it was a sharp pain in my chest about 10 seconds after swallowing, followed by a lot of spit or some people call it slime....which I figured out quickly to spit not swallow! After a lot of spitting in the sink the pain subsided and all was fine....felt like throwing up, the tingly feeling I get before upchucking was there but nothing actually happened. It wasn't as horrible as I'm making it sound, not a great thing either but definitely nothing to be afraid of.

When I am stuck, I feel it. It kind of sits there, some people call it the golf ball feeling. When I was stuck on a cashew (which I don't recommend eating) I felt it for days. When it passed, it was wonderful.

Believe me when you are stuck, you feel it. And I can get stuck, or get that pain, on liquids first thing in the morning. Just stop, wait, and try again later.

Good luck...

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
