Hey everyone! My name is Desiree, I am 25 almost 26. Current weight is 280 at a short 4 ft 11 inches.

I currently have no insurance but will be getting some through work and it covers weightloss surgery. I don't know the specifics yet.

That being said I was wondering where I start in this process.

Once I get the insurance do I just go find a surgeon or do I go to a regular doctor and get a referral.

Do I contact the insurance company right away?

Feeling a little lost but would like to get started asap.

Thanks!

Hi and welcome! When you get your insurance, call the number on the card and ask about bariatric surgery. They will tell you things like what types of surgery are covered, what tests they require if any, etc. Every insurance compant is different in what they require before they approve you. They may have a list of doctors they want you to choose from, or you might be able to choose your own.

It depends upon the type of insurance that you get - some will require a referral from the primary care doc, and some do not.

If you don't need a referral, then your doc may recommend a bariatric surgeon he is familiar with and you can start there, but there is no reason to stop there - most family docs know little about bariatrics beyond what it presented to them in seminars from the bariatric department of their associated hospital, and they may or may not be any good. It is time for you to do your own research - about the various procedures available (if you haven't already,) and surgeons in your area. Go to some of their seminars and learn about them, what they offer and see who you are comfortable with.

after you are insured go to a seminar. look for one on the internet. I went to 2 different ones checking out the doctors and staff involved at the clinics. usually at these seminars they ask you for your insurance information. and than in the next few days they call you to say they verified your insurance. now you can make your choice as to what doctor you want to go with. keep in mind, location, after care, reputation and how many of the surgeries they have done. good luck. and be sure you research carefully all wls. each one is special to a certain person especially the reasons of wls. don't take preparing yourself with education on your own. really scan the internet and web sites like this one to be as prepared as you can be. good luck on your journey

you may want to look for a bariatric center of excellence in your area. that would be a good place to start.

Since your insurance is new, you may want to make sure you are not under a pre-existing condition clause.

Hmmm I guess I didn't think about a pre existing clause. I hope not. I go in Monday to sign up for the insurance.

I'm nervous because it is the main reason why I am getting insurance through work is the possibility of having the surgery. It is BCBS.

I want to be healthy due to a family history if diabetes, high bp and I suffer from fertility issues (PCOS) which is causing me to really heavy in the front.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Your so close now! It's gonna be great :) Wishing you a speedy recovery and looking forward to seeing how it goes!

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

Am feeling this right now. My surgery date is 4/1. Sign the consent tomorrow. I feel like I overloaded myself with too much info, too many opinions. Got to the point where I was wondering if I should do this. Then I thought of my reasons for taking this step and that settled my nerves. Still get moments of doubt but am striving forward. Am just going to follow my book from the surgeon. Joined this because I was told by my dietician that I should do this for support
