SDDW0720 1 Posted March 20, 2014 Hi guys! This is my first thread and I'm a bit curious but also wanting to let me fiancé know about this rapid weight loss. I had my Sleeve done on March 11 so I am 9 days out. I am down 17.3 lbs. when I told my fiancé this, he seemed a bit shocked and concerned. He asked if this was a reasonable amount and I just said I wasn't sure and that everyone loses differently. His coworker had the surgery in February and lost 30 lbs in 5 weeks so he is going by her weight loss which I know isn't right because like I said everyone is different. I guess I'm just curious to know if this is a reasonable amount or should I be concerned? Any help would be greatly appreciated! :-)
PdxMan 4,292 Posted March 20, 2014 Well, as you said, everybody is going to lose differently. There are too many factors and afterall, what good does it do you? If someone is losing faster than you, do you follow the guidelines closer? (You should be doing that anyway) Do you start exercising? (You should be doing that anyway) Or what if you are losing faster than them? Do you stop following the guidelines so close? Stop taking walks? Like I said, there are too many different factors: Age, starting weight, gender, hormones, base musculature ... the list goes on. The bottom line is to follow the guidelines as best as you can and your body will lose at the rate it will lose at. There are going to be stalls along the way and your body will go into starvation mode at times. All you have to do is follow the guidelines as close as possible and know that you will lose weight. Weighing yourself daily will only set you up for sorrow. There is no way you will be able to meet the unreasonable expectations you set on yourself. The scale only measures weight, not fat. I weighed once a month and always saw a loss. It kept me focused and motivated. 2 1Day1Life4Now and ProudGrammy reacted to this
jess9395 5,449 Posted March 20, 2014 Everything Pdxman says is totally true. But if allays any concerns I lost 17lbs my first week, but then "stalled" for about two weeks. It all evens out. I am 3.5 months out now and down 71lbs. Active and healthy. 1 ProudGrammy reacted to this
JeanZ_RN 378 Posted March 20, 2014 As long as you are feeling well and are getting in your liquids and your Protein, there is probably nothing to be concerned about. 1 1Day1Life4Now reacted to this

Are you & your fiance' concerned cause you losing too much or not enough......If you based it on your weight loss so far....you would theoretically lose about 50 lbs in 30 days..... (which you probably won't). Either way, what @@PdxMan said is how you should consider you basis for losing. 1 1Day1Life4Now reacted to this
1Day1Life4Now 882 Posted March 20, 2014 Weight loss journeys are as unique as the individuals going through the journey. What is right for you will happen for you. You will get out of the program what you put into it. Good luck.
SDDW0720 1 Posted March 21, 2014 Thank you to the ones with kinder remarks. I thought this forum was used for support from all individuals who have gone through weight loss surgery. Unfortunately it seems others are here to judge based on questions being asked. I was just looking for some clarity and peace of mind..no need to belittle my questions. 1 Mrs. Whatsit reacted to this

I assume your reference to judging is directed at me. If I was insensitive in any way, I apologize. I certainly didn't intend for you to take offense to my response to your post. I was merely trying to clarify what it was you were concerned about. Your post was ambiguous in this regard. I was in no way belittling you or your post. I just could not find a question in it to answer. Others were also trying to support whatever your concerns were by simply suggesting everyone loses at different rates and there is nothing to be concerned about. Even your own post states this. I hope you do not continue to feel anyone was trying to be judgmental or un-supportive and will return to inquire about any issues or questions you may have during your recovery. 1 capecoralgrandma reacted to this

I lost another 30 lbs over the next 2.5 weeks. I stalled a bit (scale-wise) but have since lost another 5 lbs and I'm 6 weeks out now. I started at 375, surgery weight was 355... I'm down around 320 now. It's PERCENT to consider not POUNDS. In my first six weeks basically I lost 13% of my total body weight, or about 25% of my "excess" weight. The woman at your FI's work might have also lost 25% of her excess weight in the first couple weeks but she started out with less to lose.... Does that make sense? You are on liquids and 9 days post op - there's basically no way to gain or maintain weight like that (I mean unless you drank 10+ shakes a day, gross).... So YES weight loss right now seems rapid. But once you get back to food, your body will readjust into a more comfortable pace. Weight loss is NOT a straight line, so even tho it seems dramatic now, it'll ease up and your SHAPE will change even if the scale pauses a little. --Em 1 Mrs. Whatsit reacted to this

I don't think anyone has judged you here. I think quite the opposite, actually. I know it was clear in your mind what was meant, but there is some ambiguity there, as Recycled points out. That is why I also went with the angle I did. Please keep in mind it is difficult to tell the "voice" used when you read a forum post. It would appear you may be reading these with a cynical point of view, which makes them sound negative to you. Please try re-reading them. When Recycled says he doesn't know how to make of some posts, perhaps what he meant was he doesn't understand exactly what your struggle is. Not that he is rolling his eyes. He follows this with a question about it, so ... We really do want you to succeed and are here to give and receive support. 2 moonlitestarbrite and Recycled reacted to this
