Anyone Just Starting the journey?

Recommended Posts

I'm fairly new to this only because I haven't had my surgery yet. I have NALC insurance and I've completed all of the necessary requirements including the 6 months of nutrition. My comorbidities are semi uncontrollable hypertension with constant changing meds, borderline diabetes, obesity induced asthma and physical therapy for my knees and feet. I am a female 4"11 and currently 219lbs. My paperwork was submitted July 21, 2014 my insurance states that the approval can take up to 30 business days soooooo, I'm still waiting on the insurance approval so that my surgeon can schedule my date. Btw. I am a usps letter carrier and years of this hard labor job has given me all of the above problems. So now you know how mail carriers can become fat after years of paving concrete, carrying heavy loads in a bag on your back, the older you get, the harder it gets for your body but the job remains the same.

I'm just getting started but I'm going to self pay. My insurance has a year long process and I don't think I can wait that long now that I've made up my mind. I just need to decide between the two centers I've narrowed down. I'm SO ready to get started.

I am just starting this process. My BMI is 40 and I think I have two co-morbidities sleep apnea and type II. I have a BIG fear that I am actually going to miss eating too much food. I really am worried that I'm not prepared emotionally as I look at this. Am I ready to give up fatty foods? Did anybody else have these thoughts before the had their sleeve done?

Just finished my first diet & exercise counseling appointment this week.... 5 more to meet insurance requirements. I'm completing the other pre surgery requirements in the mean time. I'm hoping surgery can be scheduled first part of feb, sooner would be better, but I'm not optimistic on a speedy insurance approval. (Let's hope I'm wrong, lol) I'm certain this is what I need to do for ME....but not so certain my husband will feel the same. I've talked to him briefly about my consideration for surgery, but really haven't discussed it at great lengths. Sitting him down this weekend for a heart to heart chat. I'm praying he's on board, and decides to be supportive. I'm hopeful he will be.

My first appt. is today. I just read on here that someone that has the same insurance as I do, that they waived the supervised 6month diet. I'm hoping that means I can move through the process quicker than 6 months. Can anyone share how long it's taking them if the 6 month diet isn't required?

-K

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
