Day 3 since WLS. Cannot tolerate pain meds. Cannot get much down.

Recommended Posts

Pretty much want to die. I can only take Tylenol for the pain otherwise nausea us too bad.

Cannot move without a serious amount of pain. I try walking four times a day to start passing gas.

Any tips to get me through this tough time would be much appreciated.

Not having fun. At all.

Pretty much the only thing you can do at this point is sip, sip, sip, walk walk walk and rest. It gets a little better every day.

First, I am sorry to see you are strugglin. But know, it will get better. If your Dr. allows it you can try GasX strips to help with the gas. They worked wonders for me right after my surgery. As for the pain, you can only do what your body allows you to do. Just sip on your fluids, walk when you can, even if for just a few seconds. And don't give up. We have all been in your situiation or close to it and we are still kicking and shedding pounds. :)

I did the gas x strips once i got home. It took me until about day 7 or so to not feel like you are.

Hand in there. It does get better. Just do what you can for now.

Thanks guys. I will hang in there. Walked a good deal today. If I wasn't sleeping, I was generally walking, at least I know tomorrow will be beter than today and on day 7 there is a glimmer of hope to maybe feel some normalcy.

I'll hang in there. And I'll keep browsing at the dress catalogs full of skinny people where I too eventually will be able to shop! ;). Thanks again.

Oh hon!! *hugs* IT WILL get better!!

On day 2 I was so dry and thirsty yet nauseated, I didn't know what to do with myself... Day 3 I just laid down and rested... I was like "omfg what did I do, what have I done to myself, oh god I made my partner pay for this..."

(I was self-pay, and NO I DIDNT "make" him pay for it, I wasn't processing my antidepressants right!)

Anyway it got better. Sips from a 1-oz cup turned into sips from a little lidded 2-oz tupperware.... Turned into sipping a little more at a time, turned into being able to gulp again after a couple weeks.

For the first two weeks, I couldn't handle anything too cold or too hot - "cold" drinks were room-temp and "hot" drinks were body temp, up to maybe 100F. I still prefer room-temp to cold, but I can have warmer stuff now.

I admit I was never big on tooth-brushing (never got the habit down) but I started brushing my teeth 2x a day with biotene toothpaste because my mouth was so dry and gross from the shakes... Not eating any food to scrape the junk off, it was awful...

I spent a LOT of time in the shower, maybe 4-5 showers a day. I put Tegaderm plastic bandages over my incisions, and just relaxed in the shower. I'd lick Water off my hands sometimes too.

My sense of smell had also ramped up and I could taste my mouth and smell my ketosis-sweat and I felt awful (thus all the showering)...

Then at about 10 days I was basically delirious for food - I had this practically pornographic image of a turkey sandwich in my head - and I got some Boars Head no-preservative turkey slices and ate one thin slice VERY carefully and chewed it to paste and it was the most amazing delicious thing I had ever eaten. ;)

It gets better. I promise.

Lol, please do not make me laugh it hurts too much. The pornographic turkey sandwich is just about how I feel now. Or would if nausea wasn't so all consuming. Thanks for that bit of boosting.

There was a twix commercial, I think, where they used this "bow-a-bow chikka chikka" music with a really deep voice going, "oh yeah, ooh YEAH"

So imagine that music, except it's slices of turkey being ripple-folded onto toasted bread...

Then a shiny knife is spreading some mayo ("OOH YEAAHH") maybe a big curly-edged lettuce leaf bouncing in slow-mo on the sandwich... ("Bownk bownk bownk") a slice of cheese, etc...

And of course imagine it like the PICTURES always show, perfect layering, etc...

Now having realized that food-porn pictures are ALSO airbrushed and fake, it helps me through head-hunger cravings. ;) because I know, it's not as tasty as it LOOKS.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
