March 24th surgery! Need some encouragement....

Recommended Posts

Hi guys,

I was reading "The big book on gastric bypass" which I love and recommend, and found out about bariatricpal.com, oh my God, what a great idea, I'm in love with you guys, specially for someone like me that does not have many people to go to for answers and support this site is a God send. I'm schedule for surgery next Monday the 24th at 7:30 am and I'm so afraid, everybody that I've talked to that have had the surgery had great experiences, pre and post op, but I've never had any surgery in my life. I'm happy that I'm doing something to change my life and I'm sure I'm doing the right thing but I'm really nervous. So if anyone out there could offer me some tips for day of surgery, surgery, hospital stay, diet after surgery or simple want to share some encouragement it will be awesome. I'm looking forward to make some good friends.

Thanks all

Ricardo

Oh Ricardo, welcome to this wonderful site. I am new here also. Maybe a week. I

was so happy to read your post and know the feeling of being overwhelmed.

I don't have many people except for the new group that I just joined from the hospital that I am going to have bypass.

I am sure someone will come on and give you the nicest ideas and this will give you more confidence than ever.

I will be watching too as I need to read the letters that I am sure you will be getting.

See, it will not only help you but me as well.

I'm so happy for you. I don't have a date yet but am sure I will be like you are right now.

The team at your hospital will give you loving care and advice.....bye for now.

You can do this. It's probably not going to be as bad as you think it is. I never had surgery either (other than my tonsils out when I was 5 but I hardly even remember that) but now I'm two weeks out and I'm glad I did it. Just follow your diet, do what your doctor says and you'll be fine.

Hi Richandria,

I have to be honest. First day after surgery I felt amazing. Second day was a little harder. But it got better. I had headaches in the hospital which were horrible. My doctor told me that this was my bodies new way of telling me I was hungry. Things the first week got better. Second week was the hardest for me. Different surgeons have different things they do postoperative and my doctor places a feeding tube and a drain. The drain stayed in for two weeks. During the beginning of week two before I had my drain out I started to really hurt. I thought it was Constipation or gas. One day was so bad I couldn't make myself do feedings or drink anything. I thought I was dying. I was getting dehydrated and I knew that was making me feel worse bit it hurt so bad to move. It started to get some better so I made it through to my two week appointment when they took out my drain. It was a miracle, all the pain went away. My doctor said the drain must have migrated. Things went up hill fast. I felt great after that. Eating was an adjustment. I was never hungry and struggled to get Protein and calories in. My surgery was October 29, 2013. I have lost 51 ilbs and I feel great. I am so happy I did it. Even though there have been struggles and has been the best decision I have made. You can do this! Don't give up and keep fighting through the battles because you will be happy.

I am new here as well I have one more preop requirement band it goes for approval. I am starting to rethink things but believe that this is the best thing for me to do. After years of struggling with my weight. That being stated stay in prayer and God will see you through. My prayers are for a successful surgery and for a speedy recovery. Keep your eye on the BIG PICTURE! A healthy you!

Hey there! I got my sleeve 3/13/14. I stayed in hospital overnight. I was determined to get out of there! Everything went smoothly. I underestimated the time it would take post-op to recover fully. But so far, so good. I'm planning to return to work Mon. Aside from occasional pains and leg cramps, I feel great! Expect a slow return to solid foods, 4-6 weeks. Week one was more broth and liquids. Im on purees now and feeling great! Good luck and be positive. You'll be fine.

Congrats to you all for taking the necessary steps to become healthy, this is a great site and people here are great and are always willing to help, I have been on this journey for 8 months and I am schedule for surgery for May 5 and I have used my time wisely by staying focus on making small changes now, and spending quality time here reading others post, concerns, fears, as well as goals. I can honestly say that your concerns, fears, vents, as well as goals and support can be met here with these great people. You can simply be yourself and no one will judge you. We all understand the struggles yo go through and many people in our lives may be supportive but they really do not understand how you feel unless they have walk a mile in your shoes, I look forward to reading your progress and becoming friends. Good luck to you all.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
