I had my surgery this past monday and today is my first full day at home. I am still wondering "what on earth did i do to myself" and a friend of mine told me its just like child birth...the first few days after you think "i am NEVER doing that again OMGEE" but then a couple months later (if that) you are smiling and can't wait to have another one. I am still waiting on the latter. I have terrible gas whenever I drink anything, which makes me frightened to drink. I am afraid i will become dehydrated soon. If anyone else has had HORRIBLE painful gas, please tell me what you did to avoid it or cure it because walking. Last night I couldnt sleep in my bed because it hurt so much. Today was much much better. I chewed on ice chips and had minimum gas, but i will need to start sipping on some Protein shakes soon. Any suggestions?!

Small sip, then burp. Move around. sugar free popsicles. Heating pad. GasX strips - although I'm not sure if that helped. The lower end if gas got moving about day 3 and that helps. I'm 1 week today and woke up feeling good! A week makes a difference!

I am 8 days post op today. The first two days were the worst for me. I spent 3 days in the hospital and was released the fourth day. I had really nasty side effects from the pain pump, such as- nausea, dizziness, bad headache, general feeling of not being well. After my barium swallow, the doctor changed my meds to liquid Tylenol 3 and I felt such a huge difference. I had a lot of gas pain in my left shoulder and also a lot of pain with the Jackson Pratt drain. I had a lot of belching and didn't tolerate my Clear Liquids very well. I found that I was afraid to drink anything, because I didn't want to hurt. The nurses gave me the little medicine cups to drink out of so that I sip slowly. I am always in a hurry, so slowing down is what helps me. Today, I feel great! Just a little sore, but nothing unbearable.

Walk, walk, walk. It helps the gas pains tremendously. Then you can drink (sip, sip, sip)! It's uncomfortable the first few days but take your PPI and walk!

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
