When do you know that you are over eatting. I had my surgery on Jan 21, 2014 and i am about 8 week on Friday. I am able to tollerate a lot of foods that I am not sure that I am to be eatting. I can eat salad which I was told that I may not be able to eat ever. The doctor is telling me that I should be at 800 calories a day however the dietaitian is saying that I still need to be at 400 calories a day... I am hungery at 400 calories and was not losing any weight. Now that I up my caliorie intake I am dropping weight every week.

I just dont want to strect out my pounch and go back to the way that I was.

Any ansers would be great.

I think that 400 calories is really low. If your doctor said 800 calories, then I would go with your doctor. I had surgery Feb. 28, 2013, so I am a little over a year post surgery and can eat between 1/2 cup and 2/3 cup of food. salad is a little trickier because that is essentially Water once it is chewed well. I really don't remember the exact week when I ate salad--thinking it was more like week 12, but I do remember wanting to eat salad from day one!

Just go slowly and only eat exactly the amounts that your doctor says. Maybe you should talk to the doctor about the nutritionist's recommendations? Just a thought...S

I am right now at a little more than 1/4 of a cup but not near a 1/2. I am still learning when I am full and when I can eat more. I have slowed down eating becuase I was getting sick really bad. I wasnt keeping anything down,. I would eat and it would come right back up. So now I am eating slower. I have found that romane lettuce is much better for me than iceberg and I have to make sure that it is shreeded up but I am excited to eat it again.

It sounds like you are doing fine. I think the lettuce is good for your digestion, too. Just remember to chew, chew, chew.

My doc says the stretching of the stomach is minimal--the area they now make the pouch from isn't very stretchy. He told me that once all the swelling is gone and the pouch totally healed, I will be able to eat about 2/3 cup of food. And, that is where I am.

Keep your Water intake up too, because if you are not drinking enough Water it is easy to think you are hungry. Sounds to me like you are doing great!

400 calories is definitely not enough. 600-800 sounds about right. If you're losing more weight by increasing calories, then you definitely weren't getting enough. I was able to eat salad starting at 8 weeks. I'm just over a year out and can eat up to 1 1/2 cups of food, depending how dense it is. With salad I can eat even more than that sometimes, since it basically chews down to liquid. I've never had a problem with salad in general. I do get slight burning sometimes with tomatoes or cucumbers, but I think that's just because they're naturally acidic.

I was under 300 calories for the first three months. When I calculated my exercise, I was often in negative calories for the day. I am now approaching 9 months, and am eating between 650 and 800 calories a day. I drink between 80 - 100 ounces of Water every day. I have lost over 170 pounds. I always eat my Protein first, and I get about 85 grams of protein a day. I know it sounds like it is not enough, but it is. Track what you are eating. I use MyFitnessPal.com for this. I have been eating salad since about six months out with no problems. You need to restrain your body to be happy when you are satisfied, not necessarily full. The feeling of being full, probably means that you have eaten too much.

I would make sure you drink liquid before you eat.. 8oz or so. This might help. I would also make sure your eating Protein rich foods, like a pouched egg for Breakfast and a Protein Drink. Stay away from carbs, they will make you hungry, even the raw veggies can

I would suggest checking with the dr before drinking right before you eat. Most surgeons recommend not drinking 30 minutes prior to eating.

My surgeon doesnt want me drinking 30 mins before a meal and for about an hour after. He said it was to ensure my body gets all the nutrients it can.

My doc is pretty standoffish with directions and I have just been winging it. I was sleeved in October and I eat pretty much anything. Sugary stuff makes me sick but other than that I can handle small amounts if anything. I don't measure when I'm eating. Does anyone measure? And if so what portion sizes and foods work best for fellow sleevers.

Feeling lost and out of the loop. :(

I weigh, measure or count (depending on the food) just about every day. I bought a digital scale from Amazon (about $25 as I recall) that will weigh in metric or Imperial and keep it on the kitchen counter so it's handy. Portion size is tough to answer since it depends mostly on calories. For example almost all nuts are extremely nutritious but portion sizes have to be small since they're high in calories (serving sizes for nuts are often stated in number of nuts so I just count). On the other hand I make a tuna salad with low fat Miracle Whip and weigh a four oz. serving. Ditto for chicken, fish or turkey. I usually don't bother to weigh veggies since they're so low in calories to begin with. I make most portion size decisions based on a combination of "serving size" and calories.

I measure most everything!

I am very bad at guessing portion sizes!!

I have small weight watchers food scale that cost around $25. I believe it is crucial to my journey.

I measure or count nearly everything! I don't know how you can accurately track what you are eating if you don't. I purchased a scale at Target, about $25.00. I use it nearly every day. I don't use it for thing that are single servings like Protein Shakes, Greek Yogurt, and my Protein Bar, otherwise it is measured. Tonight I had a taco salad, I measured everything I put in it. I believe this will be vital to long term success.

Hello I'm so glad I joined I was also wondering if I was eating to much at 1 month post surgery. I was told about 500-1000 calories a day plus I exercise. I'm about 700 and feel pretty good but am also scared about stretching my stomach out. This group is great! How do we know if we are doing that. How do we prevent from doing that? The Drs don't seem real informative

      Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
      1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

        All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

      I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
