Why would you have 3?

@@jellybean04 Yes, I am going to have my 3rd WLS. I first had the lap band and had a huge host of problems with it and was the beginning of my GERD problems. When I revised to the VSG in 2010 it wasn't as known as it is today that if you already had GERD pre-surgery you really aren't a good candidate for VSG. I have extremely awful GERD, worse than ever. I wake up in the middle of the night choking and I sound like I have a sore throat all the time.

Believe it or not there are medical reasons for someone to have revised 3 times, and I am one of them. I am currently working with my Bariatric Surgeon to revise to the Rny Gastric Bypass.

All that said, I was incredibly successful with my Sleeve. I love my Sleeve still, I am 3.5 years out and in spite of my issues it still works for me. We will just have to part ways and I will get a new tool.

Take care, and good question.

Though I understand wanting a third revision, having ALL that done to your body concerns me. The fear of gaining weight back is a huge one for all of us. But you've got a quarter of your original stomach, and now you're going to reroute that? No judgement.......but it truly scares me for you. Once all is done, there isn't a lot of room to deal with potential issues. I wish you the best of luck with your decision.

I'm very curious about your journey and experiences. However, I don't want to be rude and reach out privately unless you are comfortable with that.

The short version of my story:

Banded in 2006

Erosion into stomach 2010 - band removed

Previous 4 years have had well managed gerd from omepraezole.

Gerd has increased in recent months and I am in process of getting evaluated to see if I have a hiatal hernia or other complication. New surgeon group (moved to a new state between 2010 and now) already asked if I would consider revision during my intake questioning. I haven't even seen anyone in that bariatric group yet! (strange!)

I'm terribly afraid to even consider further surgeries, except to repair complications, because of all that I have already been through. I don't know anyone who has been down the road I have, so seeing that there may be others here, is a ray of hope.....

Hi @@Felisity it turns out the best cure for GERD is revising to the Bypass. I will need a revision no matter what, but I'm def going to revise to the Bypass since I would like to be gone with reflux too. It's really awful! :(

I've had that same GERD problem -- sore throat to the point I couldn't speak out loud. Lots of coughing and choking -- I went to the ER one time thinking I was having an asthma attack (don't have asthma) and it turns out I was choking on stomach acid. And the weird thing is that I don't feel the burning sensation much at all (unless I eat late at night). My GERD is kind of "silent".

That's why I'm going straight to the bypass.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
