My surgery was on March 11, 2014. The sleeve was wonderful but during surgery my esophagus tore. I spent five days in the hospital with no Water or food to drink strictly IV fluids. Tomorrow will be exactly one week after surgery and I have only lost 1 pound. Is this normal should I be losing more weight? I would have thought I would have lost more since I was not eating or drinking anything for five days. Can being on IV fluids and antibiotics around-the-clock call a stall at the beginning? Please enlighten me with your stories and advice I could really use the encouragement.......

I'd say that's normal. They pump you full of fluids in a normal procedure. If you were only on fluids for that long I'm sure they really did for you in order to avoid dehydration. Also, you're swollen internally and body just went through some trauma. Try to avoid the scales for a couple of weeks and give your body a chance to heal. You'll see the numbers move in no time!!

HMMMM.. ID check on that.. They actually pump you with gas and you have to get rid of the gas by walking. In the first 2 weeks i lost like 28lbs ish. I would just ask your dietician/nurse. I agree with IROCKEDTHE80s re the trauma and you are swollen, Hey im still rocking the 80's in the 2010's.. M3 ROCK Festival coming up in a few weeks!!

I was actually six pounds heavier the day after surgery due to all the fluids and swelling despite the fact I did not eat a thing in the first 24 hours.

I also weighed more after surgery and did not get back to pre surgery weight for a week.

You are probably full of fluids from the iv. Give yourself a few days to eliminate this Fluid and then you'll see a nice surprise on the scale. I gained 9 pounds post-op with my lapband without having anything but Clear liquids. On day 5 my body started to give it up and I lost 5 pounds overnight.

Hope all goes well with your torn esophagus. I hadn't heard of that before.

Take care.

Sue

I was sleeved on 03/05. I lost 9 pounds in the first 8 days. I was switched to soft foods on day 8 and I have gained 1 pound since I went to soft foods. Very discouraging.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
