I am less than a month from my surgery with Dr. Nick in Dallas. They have already called in multiple prescriptions. I have 4 scripts for nausea alone (not counting what they will give me in the IV). I have a gel that I rub between my wrists, the patch for night before, sublingual anti-nausea, and Emend (1 pill which costs almost $70 for ONE pill). Ok, so I guess nausea is a big deal for some and a not-so-big-deal for others. I am going to take everything I can get because I don't want to be in the hospital and wish I had bought the one pill that supposedly lasts for several days.

As well, I am scared because they prescribed me hydrocodone which I have on my allergy list. It makes me really sick/vomiting with itching and hives. Also,I had a surgery in Oct whereby I was in ICU for a day and I was given dilaudid. It helped me the first few times I had it but suddenly after a dose of it, I started vomiting/heaving. I was also given benedryl for the itchiness. It is my understanding that I may not have a deadly allergy to these meds, but just a high sensitivity. I guess the bottom line is: I am concerned that I am not going to have adequate pain control.

Also does anyone know anything about the left side muscle stitch that Dr. Nick does? Apparently it is a very tight stitch and it "pops" somewhere between 3-6 weeks and before the stitch pops, it causes quite a bit of pain for some. Chime in if you guys know about any of this stuff. Sorry this post is kind of all over the place. I do appreciate everyone's input.

Just before I was wheeled in for surgery I had them go over all of my allergies with me. In the or they removed everything I was allergic to so that it wasn't even an option. As far as the stitch in the largest incision, that appears to be common and it just is what it is. It's concerning when your going through it then it pops and you feel like you never even had surgery.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
